One big-ass bulb. Achille Castiglione, one of the century's formost designers and responsible for many, many objects that have become part of our modern design vernacular (check out this super cool rotary phone...), designed this sweet little lamp with a big bulb, The Lampadina.

Castiglione died in 2002, but Flos has just started producing this lamp, which features an oversized frosted bulb and a base made from a film reel that allows the cord to be rolled up when necessary. We like it and think that they would be great additions to a bedside, especially when used in pairs or series. Available from Surrounding for $77. (via Funfurde) MGR

Rotary Phone link doesn't work.
I feel like this look could be replicated at Home Depot for less than $77. Am I naive?
I don't know what they were trying to link to, but a picture of the phone can be found http://www.evanizer.com/castiglioni/castigobjectpages/phone.html
tlack: No, I think you're right. Then again a) how much is your time worth (Go to the store, buy the right items, solder them together, etc. etc.)? and b) wouldn't you like to own something made by Castiglione? Well, okay, I only just heard of him and would have formerly associated the name with The Book of the Courtier. Probably a descendant, keeping up the family tradition of promoting social complications through ostentatious consumption.
But I logged onto comments to say I'm really glad this lamp takes into account the cord, and I wish more designers and decoraters would remember the importance of things like cords and outlets and safety.
fixed the link. damn sorry about that.
And have to add that I think EVERYTHING is worth trying to copy and make by yourself, but you would be surprised how quickly $77 can go, even at Home Depot. the real gain won't be the $$, but the thrill of figuring it out. M
