Like caps for your teeth... It costs a lot of money to buy a new tub or to have it re-enameled when it has gone scratched or worn around the drain. Re-glazing is the New York answer. While we have heard that re-glazing is a toxic process (keep away from the fumes) and that it isn't as hard as real enamel (it can chip easily), it isn't a bad solution for the money. MGR
We were tipped off to Metro Refinishing over the weekend:
I used Metro.
They service the whole NYC metro area (I'm in brooklyn), and $250 is the all cash deal they offer -- I think its a little spendier (but not much) if you want to pay by check ... they also regrouted my tiles around the tub for an additional $150.
Well worth it-- my bathroom looks new.

I used Metro Refinishing for my tub and they were horrible. They forgot to grout around the tub like I asked them to. Then the tub started to peel 3 months later. When I called to talk to them, they hung up on me. There are a lot of good companies out there. Do not use Metro.
I highly recommend Metro. For $280 they re-glazed, and re-caulked my tub. I travel regularly and unexpectedly for work and must have canceled on them three times. Each time they were very understanding and polite. They protected my bathroom tiles and toilet with butcher paper during the glazing. I opted to not go with the anti-slippery glaze, but it would have only been another $20 bucks. The tub is sparkling!
