Spare change. With space and time in short supply in our fair city, we have been building on the concept of the "Landing Strip" for some time: the place where you deal with everything that comes into your home.
We change receptacles every few years, but our latest favorite way to sort change when we come in the door is with stainless metal ice cream cups. Rather than let it pile up in a mix, we sort coins into four small bowls whenever we come in, which makes it a lot nicer to look at and much easier to grab ahold of quarters when you need them. We found them at Amazon (6 or $14) and also at any kitchen supply store on the Bowery. MGR

I love this idea of a "landing strip." Most my living room becomes my landing strip. I throw down my work bag, laptop, keys, newspaper, credit cards, money, misc. purchases from the fay, gym clothes. A system for coralling all that crap right when I come in the door makes a lot of sense.
I have two "bins" (a cool grass woven basket for the papers, and a old metal basket from Angel Street for the umbrellas and tide) by the door. Adding to this grouping in a tidy way, or moving my "landing strip" sounds great.
I searched, but didn't see you writing here about landing strips before today. Have you? ** Excellent suggestion. Very practical, New York apartment ideas **
You're kidding, right? I can't get my husband to put his change into one container, let alone separate it into four. He just dumps it into the top drawer of his night stand.
A few years ago I was home with a cold, so I rolled all of his change. It came to just over $63.00, and I bought a fabulous pair of shoes on sale.
My boyfriend comes home and dumps his change all over the apartment. I walk around all the time scooping it up and putting it in two large vessels--one for silver, the other for pennies.
Two years ago, around the time the vessels began overflowing, we opened a Commerce Bank account after hearing about their Penny Arcade. We now have over $350 in the account and are overdue for another visit.
I don't complain about the change anymore, just scoop with visions of change bought walks down the Champs-Elysées.
Good for you Carla. And buy yourself a nice pair of shoes while you're in Paris!
Years ago I bought a wonderful change sorter for my ex at an office supply shop [Staples? Office Depot? one of those big ones]. I was the only one who ever used it, but it did a great job of automatically sorting change and made it easy to wrap them afterwards. I wrapped $45 for him one weekend...
