More stuff. New stores come and go with hardly a whimper, but this one might just do some good. Room & Board has just openend in Soho (105 Wooster Street), giving us all a chance to see, touch and feel what we have only seen in catalogs for the past few years. But enough of our words, listen to Sara P.:
Finally the new Room and Board store is open in Soho! This Chicago-based chain (oh well) has a lot going for it. The furniture is a very carefully balanced blend of contemporary and traditional (not as edgy as DWR but not many roll-arm sofas).
The clean lines look great for many urban settings, and the price point is devine (quite a few of the sofas are about $1150 in fabric). Here's what really makes it a New York venue-- many of the furniture pieces have a smaller stature! There are multiple sofas with depths in the low or mid 30"s, and many of the designs also come in a love-seat.
This is a major accomplishment as far as I'm concerned, since other New York establishments seem to think we all have room in our 4000sf McMansions for sprawling pieces of furniture 42" deep and counting!

I love my Room and Board furniture! I live in Chicago, so I've had access to the store for a while, but I was so impressed with their stuff. I second the importance of the smaller-scale furniture... it's smaller-scale without looking small.
Every set-up they had in the store was a liveable, attractive room (vs. the DWR here, at least) which made the shopping easy.
And (again, based on Chicago experience) the delivery charges were only $55, keeping the overall cost low.
(I swear I'm not an R&B shill, but I think they have good-quality, well-designed pieces that work well in urban homes.)
Please, please give more attention to your punctuation. No apostrophe on its as a possessive! It's = it is.
Thank you.
(A devotee of the take-no-prisoners approach to correct punctuation, and a big fan of your site.)
Room & Board is Minneapolis based.
Thanks, Carol. I agree, both about the punctuation and about the site.
I love room & Board. I lived in Minneapolis for six years and visited the store often. It's perfect for New Yorkers. The furniture is beautiful, affordable and modern. I bought a couch ten years ago and recently gave it away. It's still in top condition. The store is far more affordable than DWR and the furniture is just as beautiful though less edgy.
I went to the SoHo store this week and ... was overwhelmed with how great the stuff, and the space, were. Really *nice* furniture and hardly anything was outrageously priced. And the fabrics were actually interesting... some quite mod/retro/(whatever), and quite comfortable. A must see.
room & board fucking sucks!!!
It's not based in Chicago.
Room & Board is reasonably priced but I've had bad experiences with them. they promise immediate delivery of those items that are listed as "stocked." i bought a sofa and then some chairs there to avoid the long wait of other companies. It took room and board forever to get them to me, despite their promises.
