Hello AT,
File under the heading: the kitchen is a crucial part of a nest.
J'love my boyfriend, but we both know our relationship will have a much happier --and longer--tenure if we share the cooking duties.
We're looking for cooking classes to take together, and were wondering if the inimitable AT had any advice about NY options in this department.
Please do advise, Liser
The Therapist loves to cook and thinks all men should cook and not be deadbeats in the kitchen. Cooking is sexy. Cooking together is fun, especially cooking and drinking....Mmmmm. And this goes for women too, not all of whom are GIFTED in the kitchen.
But the Therapist wonders, if more women cook, why are all the famous cooks men? Something is amiss here. Men are sneaky sometimes.
Here is the Therapist's top list of schools for classes:
- ICE: The Institute of Culinary Education
- The New School Culinary Arts Program
- The French Culinary Inistitute
FCI is $$$ but excellent. For more info see SKGR at SaraKate.net which started as a blog of culinary school at FCI. The Therapist

thanks for replying, MGR! we signed up for a new school class, as it happens, so i'm happy our choice receives the at stamp of approval.
My wife is a personal chef who gives private lessons. She was trained at FCI and always speaks very highly of them.
I grew up in a household where both genders were into cooking bigtime. On the comment, "...if more women cook, why are all the famous cooks men?", it is my belief that women cook as a expression, be it love or creativity. Sometimes even anger. But with most men that I know who cook it is more about competition. Just look at the food network. Iron Chef, international dessert competitions and don't even get me started on the southern barbeques. My brother even challenged my sister to a goose liver pate contest.
I just took a workshop class at the Institute of Culinary Education, the essentials of Mexican cooking, and absolutely loved it. Would take another class in a heartbeat.
For any members of the tribe (or not, I guess) the JCC on Amsterdam does cooking classes incl. ones esp. for couples. I haven't taken any so I can't speak to their quality.
