I had only fantastic experiences with Lore Decorators. I had a sofa, chair and ottoman; I provided all my own fabric. I am as picky as can be, and I have no complaints about any work he did. Very clean and neat, and all the work was made to look as if it was original to the furniture. I really appreciated that he was so patient with my indecision an insanity (I changed my mind about the fabric I provided for the chair after he go started working, and he did not charge me extra)
He was always punctual and courteous as others have mentioned.
He also loan me two chairs so I would have a comfortable chair to sit and watch TV while the work was being done.
How nice is that!
A few months later I had him make me curtains for my bedroom from boldly colored hand printed vintage linen fabric. He matched the fabric print perfectly.
Beautiful work!
Anybody used Lore's lately? They seemed to have wonderful reviews in 2005-2006 but not so great in recent times. I'd love to have some recent reviews and experiences.
Or can anybody recommend another place to reupholster antique french chairs? I am always seeing gorgeous discarded chairs or chairs at flea markets in desperate need of repair but hesitate in purchasing since I am afraid that reupholstery would cost a fortune.
Folk-LORE
After reading consumer reviews on sites like this and seeing that New York Magazine had recommended Lore Decorators as "Best Bargain Upholsterer" we thought we'd give them a try. We gave them a 3rd generation wing back chair to reupholster.
A "sub-par attempt" the first time out of the gate, we requested that they "make good". Uneven and irregular shaping of the chairs scalloped back, poor stitch-work, seat cushioning and reversal of the fabric, to name a few.
It took 2 weeks to get the owner to come and take a look at the chair. When he finally arrived, he begrudgingly agreed that the quality of their work was questionable and that they would take the chair back and "make good". 2 months later, they were waiting on fabric, which lead me to believe they tried to fix it without replacing the fabric and failed.
3 1/2 months and they finally delivered the chair. The work was much improved. The finishing is much closer to what we originally expected. We still had some issue with the seat cushioning and the shape of the top of the chair (things we had brought to their attention more then once) but had they delivered this chair to us originally we would have lived with it.
The final product was acceptable for the price but not worth the journey.
