Guests make their way up to Hilary and Glenn’s front door via a winding path that’s a little on the steep side—even by Seattle standards. And when you walk inside, you definitely feel as if you’ve reached a summit of sorts. Light pours down from the vaulted ceiling’s skylight, spilling into every corner of the main level of their home, and when you step down into their living room—what a view! Natural tones mix with an array of colors, but colors that are mellow and soft…and I might even go so far as to say, tranquil. (Well, look there. I just did.)

The rest of the home is a really pleasing combination of bold, modern elements like a turquoise bedroom wall and lime green television stand, mixed with vintage done different: check out those wood-framed paintings in the nursery and school house-ish side chair in the TV room loft they scored at a Sunday market. Everywhere you look there’s something new and beautiful to see, but it’s not the least bit overwhelming. On the contrary, their décor makes you want to take a seat, rest your legs and just enjoy the scenery.

Apartment Therapy Survey:

Our Style: Casual, inviting, simple, with a mix of new and old, and color.

Inspiration: Thoughtful and lived-in spaces where nothing is too precious.

Favorite Element: The natural light and high ceilings.

Biggest Challenge: Making the house feel connected while living on multiple levels. Our house has five floors so we are constantly going up and down stairs.

What Friends Say: Friends with kids: “It’s so clean!” In general, I think our friends feel it’s a comfortable place to hang out.

Biggest Embarrassment: Our master bathroom. It’s a whole lot of bad tile.

Proudest DIY: The fireplace. It was our first tiling project. We had no idea what we were doing but we figured it out.

Biggest Indulgence: Putting in our hardwood floors. We splurged when I was pregnant because we knew we would never get around to it after Sullivan was born.

Best Advice: Live in your space awhile before you change anything major so you know how you’re going to use all the rooms.
