Don’t tell my agent, but sometimes it’s good to be an unemployed actor.
During the last month of kitchen renovations, I have probably spent a total of 40 hours sitting in my apartment, waiting for contractors, electricians and plumbers to arrive.
On the rare occasion they show up on time, there is always a construction question that arises that, if I were at a full-time job, I simply wouldn’t feel comfortable leaving a helpful neighbor to answer in my place. So I wallow in unemployment and try to stay out of the way.
Even if I trusted the contractors to work without my supervision, my building doesn’t have a doorman, so there’s no way to let them in. Add this to the three UPS deliveries I’ve missed since moving here, and I’m more desperate for a doorman than for a boyfriend.
Other people are certainly in my situation, but with full-time jobs; I constantly wonder how they manage.
By the way, if anyone’s concerned about how this unemployed actor is going to pay for his kitchen, so are this unemployed actor’s parents. TF

I have EVERYTHING sent to my office -- as someone with a full-time job and a rather large wedding registry, it made sense to have gifts shipped to my office and then a friend help me bring them all home at one time in a borrowed car. It wouldn't work for a kitchen sink, but it worked for my place-settings!
ps - where in pittsburgh are you from?
Manhattan mini storage accpets deliveries at my location. (62and 1st) This is how all the drug sales reps get their supplies. Most Mailing/shipping ie UPS stores will accept packages and faxes for that matter.
Question -- "Drug sales reps" = drug dealer or pharmaceutical rep? Inquiring minds want to know.
Our doorman doesn't come on duty until 6pm, but thankfully our super will sign for packages. If I had to shlep everything home from my office, I might as well go to the store and purchase the items. It would save shipping charges.
Jamie Beth-believe it or not, you CAN ship your kitchen sink to the office! I found a great deal on eBay for an undermount stainless sink, and had it shipped right to my desk at work!
did you install it at your desk, too? that would be too cool!
In this city-of-odd-need, I'm amazed that someone hasn't come up with a service that's a combo housesitter/delivery receiver/contractor "babysitter." Perhaps staffed by out of work actors...!
Hey, to all of you ship-to-your-office folks out there, take a minute to think about what this kind of shipment means to the helpful folks of your company's mailroom... see how they feel about schlepping your "wonderfully convenient sink delivery" to your desk, before you make your next mail order purchase...
Last year our company actually had to make an announcement because so many people were having holiday packages sent to them at work.
ps, TF--
Is that picture the desired doorman or the desired boyfriend? ;)
I made an arrangement with our receptionst -- we don't have a mailroom so she held all my wedding gifts for a few days at a time and then I schlepped them to my office.
Yes! of course I asked the folks in the mailroom before I shipped the sink. It is definitely important to ask first!
