The Pitch:
When we first saw this apartment, at an open house, it was an estate sale and had not been renovated in forty years. The walls were black with grime, the kitchen was hospital-uniform green and the bifold closet doors, at least those on the tracks, did not open.
We thought it had potential and, with the help of contractors and for less than the down-payment, replaced everything in the bathroom except for the toilet, tore out and replaced the closets, raised the hall ceiling, built a loft, replaced the existing light fixtures, installed recessed lighting in the living room and a chandelier in the hallway, redid the floors and painted.

Great remodel. I like the loft, hall storage area, and wall colors. My only criticism would be that the living room area looks crammed with furniture -- it could probably use a little "editing." (However, as anyone knows who's seen my place, I'm not really one to talk!)
I am admittedly prejudiced against loft beds, but I would still consider this space a potential winner. It has a warm, homey feel without being over cluttered. Good use of the space available with ample storage and appealing paint colors. Nice kitchen and terrific bathroom.
Very nice - definitely in the running! I agree with Katherine - the living room is a bit cluttered. I would pair down on the furniture - get rid of the metal side chair at least, and maybe replace the little pictures above the sofa wih one big one. Also, I might go with just one long coffee table in front of the sofa and get rid of the side tables. Maybe put a curtain or something behind the bookcase to hide some of the storage back there? I really like the loft a lot and the cabinetry in the hallway looks great. You've done a wonderful job with color - brightens up the place siginficantly! I would love to see the before prictures - sounds like you guys really took the place on quite a journey! Well done!
I agree with Katherine - wonderful built-in storage and color choices, but different furniture may help the living area feel more spacious. Perhaps a small sectional instead of that sofa and armchair? also, i see you have a desk next to the hall closets but it looks like there's an office area below the loft, behind the bookcases. moving that bookcase or otherwise opening the under-loft area to the rest of the room may also help the room feel more open. Great job on the bathroom!
On second thought all those small pictures and doodads on the wall above the sofa are too busy looking and have no focal point. Like the color in the kitchen. Do you know the name of it?
It's a bit cluttered with all the pics on the wall but I love the loft and the closets in the hall with the mini curtain over the top. Well done!
Love - The cozy loft, the storage and chandelier in the entrance, the mirror in the living room, and the floors.
Like - The strong colors, window treatment, office under the loft, kitchen.
Strongly dislike - All the pictures on the wall. Hung too high, and whoa! That's just way too much for me, what with the sconces and frames... But they might have sentimental value, so don't listen to me.
The furniture is a little cluttered, but it does look cozy.
Also, MGR, I am going to take a moment and gratuituously whine about the photo function - is there any way to give us an option to just view/select thumbnails of a slideshow? The slideshow thing is a little annoying sometimes. I know, waah waah...
The black and white bathroom and the yellow kitchen are my favorite parts of this apt....all the colors are really very lovely though! The hallway storage looks really nice too.
Love love love the wall of storage/shelves. My favorite -- I think all apt dwellers should have them! I usually hate lofts, but considering the size of the apt I think this really is the way to go with this space.
Is it me, or is the bathroom sink totally incongruous with the design of the apt? It's a little to hip for the 1930's-ish checkerboard tiles in the bathroom. Not wild about the shower door either -- that's just one of my quirks. But the closed storage makes up for these perceived flaws!
The photos on the wall would work if they were just photos clustered like so many "Mission School" artists do these days, but all those korbels make it look cluttered. I actually uttered "What the..." when I got to that photo.
Something I just realized that I don't in kitchens-and I would have otherwise liked this one- is the cabinet doors that are only large enough to cover the openings. They should cover the cabinets in their entirety and then the lines would be completely clean and modern. I did like the use of color thoughout the apartment.
Nice, I like all the storage you have in the hallway. I also like the bathroom. Before, the thought of a glass shower door reminded me of a sliding door with a metal track that got all gunky. But your door looks great and easy to maintain. Where did you get it?
I am always in awe of people who buy disgusting apartments and make them beautiful, and I don't think people realize the time and effort it takes -- the co-op board approval, the contractors, the whiny neighbors. So in addition to how nice this apartment is, I think they should get extra points for how far they brought this apartment.
I'm not sure what the moderators will allow, but here are a few things.
First, thank you for all your comments, criticisms and complements. We greatly appreciate your range of perspectives.
To answer some of your questions...
All the paints are Benjamin Moore paints. The three colors in the kitchen are Honeybell, Golden Light and Citrus Mist. All three are on the same paint strip (swatch?) in the "Classic Colors" collection.
We got the shower doors custom made through Nemo Tile at 48 East 21st Street. We saw similar doors at Home Depot Expo and you can probably get shower doors like these at most bathroom stores.
Photography is a hobby of mine and the pictures on the wall above the sofa are ones that I've taken over the years. They are placed high on the wall so as to be out of the reach of our large and mischievous cat.
For those who are interested you can find pictures of the apartment as it was on the day I closed here ... www.jameyanderica.com/pics/original
An extra note ... under the loft we have a second workstation and a small library.
Great apartment! I like the idea of the loft but how high are your ceilings and how about the space between the loft and the ceiling? Looks a little cramped.
stunning entryway
Wow. Comparing the before and after pictures is amazing. And the loft is done really, really well (rather than looking like a college, bunk bed dorm, it looks in place and purposeful). Also love the closets. Agree with others though that the sink in the bathroom looks a little out of place, but its cool anyway! Thanks for sharing.
my favorite small apartment so far--it looks like real people live here. it's the fist one i've liked that i didn't think i would "mess up" if it were actually mine. i especially love the kitchen colors, and am planning to use it as ammo to win my guy over to the yellow kitchen idea.
i also like how, even though everything isn't from a single school or style, everything looks picked with care. i feel like it must look just how you want it to, and that's an amazing feat.
Their use of space with design is very efficient and pleasing. The contolled use of color added warmth to the space and I liked the natural wood as well.
The small pictures were OK but I'm sure they have good memories for Jamey & Erica...maybe different frames or one big frame holding all the photos for a collage. Minor detail to an otherwise lovely nest in New York.
I am in Houston and am amazed at the good use of space...I will quit whining about my lack of storage.
Good job y'all.

i like your scattered pictures, I just wish you could add more lower down, so that they fill the space. You should get rid of the big armchair -- replace it with something comfortable but smaller scale so it doesn't seem to block the couch. I think your next project should be a built-in workstation where the wooden one is now, with some concealed storage--then it will all be perfect!
I am one of those that just isn't a loft-bed person, so this isn't my favorite... having said that, though, I love that your loft actually has a small staircase (with a landing!), which makes the thought of going up there more inviting than the unfortunately common ladder.
Love the built-ins in the bathroom.
Love that there is an honesty, for want of a better word, in these photos. It's cleaned up, but definitely lived in.
But, I have to say, not a fan of the orange drapery above your hall closets (a "Gates" tribute?).
I am DYING to know where the large storage type units right by the desk came from. I am moving to NYC in a few weeks and am looking for something exactly like this. Please let me know...anyone!
Very cool space. This was is a creative way to make a small space look large and liveable. The loft is fabulous.
This creative couple must be really cool!
I think my primary objection to the overall design of this space is a lack of cohesion in any of the objects, colors, or materials used. It just doesn't seem to have been planned out in an orderly way. So many things clash with one another I can't even begin to make recommendations, but generally speaking, it helps to decide what your priorities are in terms of color, materials, and functionality.
If one important piece is a certain shade, like the color of the built-in cabinetry, then everything else has to work well with that. The wood of the futon is too dark and creates a strange contrast to the blond wood, but maybe the living room just needs a little work.
If I made one change to this place, it would be to get rid of the two ugly rugs and put in something simple like a colored jute or bamboo rug or something semi-lavish, like a large plush rug in a medium tone, say dark brown. A Chilewich rug could also look good (though perhaps a little too minimalist in the living room), and you might have matching chilewich rugs at the entry and in the living room. There was a huge blowout on those somewhere online recently.
And maybe light curtains instead of dark curtains. It always helps to lighten the walls and darken the floors to create a sense of space. And maybe a more visually interesting futon cover and chair cover, something with a simple, elegant print perhaps, or just colors that better complement the overall scheme of the room, like dark brown ultrasuede or gray linen (to match the blue walls).
I think my primary objection to kelvin's comments is that he extensively addresses only his objections and criticisms of our choices of color and materials while completely failing to address our use of this limited space. I find this particularly offensive as I view design of space as critical to life in a tiny apartment while decorating is more subjective. His negativity and complete lack of comment about the layout of space or furniture in this, or any other entry, causes me to think that he mistook this for a best-decorated, best-photographed and best-lit apartment contest instead of a SMALLEST coolest contest amongst mostly amateurs for fun!
