The Pitch:
My boyfriend and I chose this neighborhood because of its accessibility. Our friends live all over Manhattan and Brooklyn, and we wanted all of them to be able to visit often. Everyone who comes over comments on the spaciousness and airiness of the apartment, with its high ceilings and windows on both sides.

We've been working on the place since we moved in in October. We're probably the least affluent people on the block, but we've made do on a small budget. Some of the furniture is, of course, from Ikea, but most of it comes from the 17th Street thrift stores or the sidewalk.
We love finding old pieces and painting them with the colors we use on the walls. Our favorite invention is the Bodum vacuum coffee maker, which we use every time we have company. Leland![]()

I love the old Mac in the bedroom!
My initial advice would be to break up the 3 items that are lined-up next to each other (kitchen sink cabinets, table, cabinet). Maybe replace the table with a narrow eating table that comes out into the room?
P.S. isn't this a 1 bedroom, not studio?
Yes, this is a one-bedroom. I let the webmaster know that it's mislabeled. Thanks for your idea about the table and cabinets. It's hard to move those away from where they are because I love having all of the counter space in the "kitchen." But now that the season is changing I guess it can't hurt.
Who's not afraid of color? Vavoom. Taupes and whites and blacks and stainless have become so boring and safe. Go, Leland.
My favorite! Cool and classy and pretty and colorful, but still lived in and not over designed. Plus, I love that you can tell that you use the kitchen a lot. My only suggestion would be to hide some of the things on shelves, like the paper towels and printer box.
What does "over designed" mean? I agree sometimes a place can look so perfect (over-styled?) as if for a magazine photo shoot, and thus un-lived in, still I'm flummoxed by what is meant in the context of this contest? I wouldn't expect an entrant to show the apartment with dirty laundry all over the place or other clutter when avoidable.
Thanks for your comments, Emily! Yes, the kitchen has gotten bigger and bigger since we moved in, because I spend as much time there as I do in bed.
I know it's impossible to tell in the photo, but the paper towels on the shelf are actually above the bathroom door and out of sight.
For some reason, this apartment says "Bridget Jones" to me. Not saying that's good; not saying that's bad. Just a mental association sparked by an observation.
Leland,
I think I should get SOME credit since I convinced you to move the bookshelf and small table as well as the infamous red suitcase. How is the baby?
I love that you showed the storage of the papertowels- I figured since they were above a doorway they were out of sight- I have a similar set up in my small kitchen- I have high ceilings and there are shelves that run around the top of the kitchen and while not high-design or pretty they are out of sight for the most part and a great place to store papertowels, T.P., brita filters, all of the non-perishables that I stock up on outside of the city where they cost SOOO much less. On the same note I like that we see the ironing board.
I like this place for the most part- I feel there is a little stuff going on and I understand living on a budget, but sometimes it's better to hold off, save up or search for a bigger piece that will do more for you than to have a lot of little furniture. I am particularly thinking of the nightstand and white bookshelf in the bedroom.
all it needs is a 60" plasma TV. everything else is perfect.
Too cute, in my opinion you've worked miracles with such a small amount of space to keep it so open and vibrant. Looks great and it got your eyes.
Thanks everyone for your comments! Feel free to ship us the 60" plasma tv.
Yes, Molly, you get some credit for the furniture suggestions. Like any apartment, it's a work in progress.
Carolyn, I'm with you on the non-perishable storage. We keep a "suburbs list." Every time I go home to Pittsburgh I buy paper towels, laundry detergent, wheat thins, etc. You can really save a bundle!
How wonderful to see your apt! The wonderful world of electronics! It is a real gem!
okay, first, i love that your grandma posted a note to you. (that is so sweet and gets points with me right there!)
i love the use color in your apartment--it makes me smile. especially the blue shears by your dining table. very nice.

p.s.
i'm also a fan of stocking up on wheat thins in the suburbs--my favorite snack.
Your apartment is beautiful. I too love seeing the old mac in the bedroom; that was my first computer. The apartment looks so bright, warm and airy. I want to come see it in person.
I love the colors! Is the circle thing happening in the bathroom a shower curtain and where did you get it?
Thanks again, everyone for your nice comments. The shower curtain is "Fun Dots" from Martha's line at KMart. Color, color everywhere!
PS everyone who votes for us is invited to our next party! ;)
I have an idea-though it is somewhat impractical. I'm not nuts about the bookshelf and the trunk in the bedroom, so wouldn't it be interesting if you found a bunch more old red suitcases and put the books in them? You could label the luggage tags with the contents. It's not so practical since you wouldn't necessarily be able to just reach over and pull one out.
I too like the use of color. For whatever reason, I wish the curtains went all the way to the floor.
I love the idea for the suitcases! Besides, who is really pulling books off their bookshelves anyway?
I, too, wish the curtains went to the floor, but our damn windows are so tall. Eventually I'll be willing to pay more and get the curtains of my dreams.
What a gorgeous apartment, I'm jelous, I wish I had your design savvy and hot color palletts. You need to come to my apt in the Village and seriously help me out! Leland Help!
Hi Leland, greetings!
I love your apart. In a scandinavian style, IKEA rules!I would only add some 50's forniture like white plastic and free-corner chairs.
a friend of mine stacks all her vintage suitcases--like an informal bureau--and keeps underwear and socks and pajamas in them.
i am in love with that tiny green child-desk. where did you find it?
Thanks, Lindsay, for noticing the vintage student desk. We found that at Housing Works on 17th street and painted it green. It's a perfect resting place for the old Mac (though I admit it's not the wisest use of space!).
Okay, this is what I always pictured my small NY apt. would look like if I had the skill to design one. Great color and nice effective use of space. I love it!
This place has so much style, and it's clear the owners put a lot of personal effort into picking the various textiles and objects in the room to suit his/her taste.
The curtains are nicely reflected in the table mats. The pale blue wall is nicely complemented by the pale green wall (one of my favorite colors), and the cool yellow/blue cabinet also fits nicely.
The bedding has a nice subtle graphic that doesn't jar with everything else and things look nice and organized. It's also nice too see so much open space.
One thing that might really liven up the room is a large framed poster or photograph that doesn't make the wall by the bed look so blank. Maybe I'm not seeing the whole room, but it seems like the room is a little too empty and something big or a series of framed pictures that create visual interest (like 4 difft. sized rectangles arranged in a large square) could work really well. And maybe some mirrors on another wall. Mirrors are always great (and cheap usually).

you probably spent 400k on this apartment. i think you should spend a little on the furniture. you have too many tiny pieces. try some bigger ones and creating a comfy area to hang out and talk , like a cozy living room space.
