Name: Allison
Location: Gramercy
Size: Just under 300 square feet
Type: Studio
The Pitch:
My last “apartment” was an 8-by-10 dorm-style room, so my priority was to finally have a place to entertain. To maximize space (and minimize expenditures), I made two major purchases: a sofa bed (with down cushions) and a wall unit (yes, IKEA).

I furnished the rest with items I already had. The kitchen table was my parents’ and has drop leaves (raised in the photos). Other solutions: I installed a second closet pole (for seasonal clothing) and hid assorted papers, linens, Tupperware, etc. in baskets and boxes on wall unit.
The coolest thing: The view – 6ft. windows face south and overlook the Police Academy exercise area! Allison

This space is so adorable! I love all you hung on that brick wall and your kitchen is so small and cute ;D
What color is that on the wall were the windows are?
I like the baskets on your wall unit too..I have the same one but I never thought to do that. Great storage idea!
Very fresh looking! Congratulations. Please share a resource if you can --where did you
find the half-round display shelves on the brick wall? tia
You are the envy of a majority of the women in NY.
A tree that grows handbags! Where did you get it?
I like the wall unit as well. Ikea seems like a four letter word (well it is), however I feel if done propperly the pieces can work out quite nicely.
As for overlooking the police excercise area...if that doesn't get you brownie points for cool I don't know what will.
"overlooking the police academy exercise area"?!? I am very jealous!!!!!!!
GREAT JOB.. Allison! I have visited her place and I must say "I have never seen someone work with such ittle space the the way Allison did".
I definitely took some tips i.e. putting magnet hooks on the fridge and hanging her washclosthes and the magentic mail basket.. gotta love that!
YOU GO GIRL! WORK IT!!
a view of the academy, well that's just about better than a key to the park! i love the brick wall in your apartment.
Your apartment is very nice and quite homey, which is hard to do in a small space. It's a little girlie for my taste, and the massive coat-tree of bags kinda bothers me -- do you really use all of them? Other than that, you've done a wonderful job of upgrading from a dorm room!
I like IKEA too, although I'm starting to feel like I don't own any furniture that I haven't put together...
Where do you sleep?
Sunny is the perfect word to describe this apartment. The sofa looks so comfy and inviting (my guess is its the down cushins).
And I love that it looks like a real person with real stuff (like a tree full of handbags) lives here. There is nothing stark and hotel-y about this place.
I’d say mission accomplished as far as creating a great place to entertain. I'd definitely like to curl on that couch w/ a cup of coffee and check out the "city's finest."
I can't believe she's gotten 16 no-ways w/ no explanation- Allison's apartment might not be high style, but she really let us into her apartment and showed us everything- the bathroom, the open closet, the bag tree etc. She gave up having a bed in the open, let the woman keep her purses.
300 sq. ft is tight- not the 150 micro studio we have seen, but the difference between 300 and 450 is vast. Allison- I like what you have done in limited space and on a limited budget.
Peter - the sofa pulls out and she sleeps there. Excellent job.
It's warm and says "home" to me. I love the color you painted the walls; it goes very well with the brick. And the place looks organized, but it's still believable that someone actually lives there. Nice job indeed!
To me, this apartment is what it is- a "first apartment". In that regard, it's acceptable, but certainly not a contender for coolest.
Loveit! Great use of limited space and lots of personality
Lovely work for a first apartment, it looks like you changed the kitchen cabinet handles and matched them to the pendant light? Or just worked with what you had. Either way I'm impressed. It took me years to treat my first apartment as more than just a waystation and start painting, changing hardware etc. Then I immediately moved...
I gave it a no way. I couldn't get past the bag tree.
Allison's place is adorable! It really is the cutest. I've been there. She can even fill that table w/ a fabulous breakfast spread! I'm charmed.
Great work with your "kitchen"! Bathroom seems dark--i know there's little to be done, and i love the colors, but can you change the lighting? maybe it's just the pic. but the warm/light colors help unify it well.
Hi there,
Have gotten a kick out of reading the comments and suggestions (almost as much as fun as reading/viewing the other entries!). Thanks for taking the time.
To answer some questions...
Miya- The wall color is peach beige (260A-3) from Behr. I originally wanted a darker shade, but am now pleased.
Laf- Unfortunately, the shelves are $5 specials from the T.J. Maxx clearance rack, but looking at them, think they were originally designed for outdoor use. You may have luck finding something similar at a store like Jackson & Perkins.
sg- I replaced both the cabinet hardware and lighting fixture in the kitchenette – can you tell I like orange? Both were inexpensive IKEA finds, because you’re right – this isn’t a forever apartment but it’s a good right now apartment.
This is a very pleasant and homey apartment that welcomes its visitors! I feel like the pictures of the kitchen don't do justice to how cool the angular design of that area is. I've very comfortably stayed overnight in this apartment on an aero bed that must be hidden somewhere!
People tend to not want to explain their vote of "no way" because one is taught not to say anything if one has nothing good to say. In my case, I realize that this a forum for just that, if warranted. I do not like the apartment, though mostly for color choices. I do not find the wall color compliments the brick in any way, not does the color of the upholstery match well with the wall color. I find it all very discordant and muddled. And, well, cheap. We all know cheap can look good, we have seen it hundreds of times on Changing Rooms, or Trading Spaces. So many wonderful items can be had second hand without looking it. I am still waiting for something worthy of winning this contest...
