If you don't have a lot of space and have always wanted to try a machine that washes and dries your clothes at once, Lauri's Malber WD 1000 Washer/Dryer appears to be a good deal (these typically sell for $1000). We say, "Someone give it a try and tell us how it works."

I had one of these in a fifth floor walk-up, and it changed my life. It is worth every penny at $1,000, but it's really heavy, so make sure you have some strong people to deliver it. It works best if you're the kind of person who does frequent small loads of laundry. I'm getting all misty just looking at the picture.
I've had a Malber for over 10 years -- it's just great. The dryer broke after about 2 years ( I may have used too many suds...) -- I didn't bother with getting it repaired because I thought it would be too expensive and it really doesn't work that well. (Hanging clothes to dry in my overheated apartment is actually faster!!!) But don't let that stop you -- dryers never work well unless they are gas or use 220 volts. 110 just doesn't cut it. But the washer is EXCELLENT -- cleans better that a top-load, uses less water, and your clothing lasts much much longer. Also, because you use so little water and then rinse 4 times, you use only a thimble's worth of detergent per load -- real cost-saver. If you have a spot for it, go for it!
I got this washer about 6-7 years ago, and it was definitely worth it, financially and time wise. I still like it, but my dryer is also not working (but i'm in CA no and just hang everything up outside to dry). Also, it does have a real personality and gets cranky sometimes, like when you don't fill it up a certain way. Saying all that, I would buy it again, especially if space is tight.
I've had this washer for two years (it's five years old; I bought it used on Craigslist for $500, though $700's a good price, too). I agree that it changed my life for the better. However, a few months ago the dryer part broke, and like the poster above, I have not yet had it fixed. The dryer, back in its day, left my clothes wrinkly. But my clothes have never been cleaner, and I have saved much agony and many laundromat quarters. Definite thumbs-up, even with its limitations.
We had one of these for about 2 1/2 years, and I thought it was a great space saver solution. The front-loading machines really work well, and spin at a much higher RPM than other washers, so the water just flies out of the clothes. I never had a problem with the dryer. We affectionately called it the WAD, for Washer And Dryer (all-in-one), but also becasue the drum is so small anything other than a tiny load leaves your clothes in a "WAD". I just made sure I was there when it stopped to take the clothes out promptly. The best part of this idea, though, is that you don't have to be around to move clothes from the washer to the dryer. I loved ours!
I bought 17 of these exact machines for my condo development. They're great space savers. They do leave clothes wrinkly, but they seem to clean well. Our biggest problem with them is that our space is so tight, we have them jammed up against the valves in the wall. The spin cycle causes the hoses to loosen. This causes water damage. It's been a nightmare, but we've found that Loctite blue will hold the hoses in place. Additionally, we had a different failure today. The hot-cold mixing hose inside the machine sprung a leak. Aargh. I have to say that the folks at Malber-USA have been very helpful and do support their product in a very real way. They even sent me a brand new machine when another one was banging loudly when it was operated. So, 2 out of 17 machines have failed due to manufacturer defects in 6 months of use. Not an "A", but with Malber-USA's support, acceptable nonetheless.
I want to live in one of Aaron's developments!! Beautifully done.
Mine also broke. The dryer stopped working after 2 years of use.
The customer service number in the booklet (516 377 1865) is not in service anymore and the new number was impossible to find. Not on their website. After calling a few stores got their new customer service number which automatically goes to the voice mail. Left message and haven't heard from them yet.
This is the new number: 818 773 9701
And the door nob is a flimsy plastic piece which broke when I open it recently. I was always careful because it didn't look durable from the beginning but it finally happened. They should have made it with steel.
I like the washer part, works well, the size is good for two people.
