Location: Fort Lee, New Jersey (Okay, it's on the fringe of our range....but at the FOOT of the GWB...close enough)
What's in it: Various vegetables and flowers. We have harvested, beets, beans, yellow and green squash, cukes, peppers and we await the first blush on our many varieties of tomatos.
Who takes care of it: Five gardeners including myself.
Favorite Garden Store: Our favorite garden store is local within walking distance to the building Metropolitan Plant Exchange.
How does it benefit the community:
I think we have benefited our building by turning a small unused area, an eyesore actually into something wonderful for residents and families to enjoy.
The many children in the building seem to get a kick out of coming back and seeing things grow.
Living in a 23 story high rise at the foot of the GWB without a terrace prompted myself and some neighbors to carve out space on our buildings property that is used to store building materials. Our management and super approved our plan they even helped plot out and turn over our dirt.
There are five gardeners, growing various vegtables and flowers. Rain and an ingound sprinker system takes care of the watering and a steady diet of miracle grow has helped. We have harvested, beets, beans, yellow and green squash, cukes, peppers and we await the first blush on our many varieties of tomatos.

I think you and your fellow gardeners did an awesome job converting this "eyesore" into something beautiful and useful!
Wonderful! You might try creating some worm bins. A good use for vegetable, paper and food scraps and eventually you will be able to use the castings for fertilizer in your garden.
What an awesome idea! It's so hard for children living in an apartment or coop to actually experience living things from inception to maturity. This provides a much sounder educational experience for them rather than video games, and if they get involved "hands-on" then can really feel that they have nutured something. It's a true self-esteem builder for the children. Good work Ms. Lewandowski.
You and your neighbors have transformed an eyesore into something both pleasant to look at as well as productive. Keep up the good work!
