Believe it or not, the sugar dispenser works with a two step process, which allows you to pour one teaspoon of sugar at a time. All the tops affix into the glass carafes by means of a silicone stopper, which grips but allows liquids, etc, to pass through. We kept thinking that the tops would fall our for sure, but they didn't.
