Actually, my mom worked for Smithkline before it became Glaxo-Smithkline. The company's based entirely in Britain now after they sold their large US pharmaceutical holdings.

If I'd have to guess without seeing the commercial and the chair, I'd say it comes from that side of the pond.

Call or e-mail customer service or the CEO's office at Glaxowhatever and ask them!

I remember the commercial and (vaguely) the chair, but can't remember if it's a chaise or a recliner...

My husband works for GlaxoSmithKline. It's headquarters are in England but it's a joint US/British company. The main sites here are just outside Philadelphia (where the CEO resides) and North Carolina. I'll set my husband on the case and see if he can find anything out!

I'd write to Stuart Elliott at the NY Times. He does an weekly advertising e-mail, and often answers questions from readers... "who is this actor/what was this song" kinda things. Unusually, he's able to come up with answers to even the most mudane questions. He'd be your best resource without a doubt.

The commercial is for a product called Requip, for restless legs syndrome. Here in the US, and agency called McCann-Erickson on Madison Ave does their ad campaign. One of their creative people assigned to that account should know.

Just wondering if anyone found out the answer to this question yet.

I have been looking for that chair too! It appears to have a bentwood frame, which I have not found, but I have found two similar chairs at spacify.com: Billie (metal and leather frame) and Bjork (leather covered frame.

I see GSK has a newer version of the commercial, the chair is still featured in it. Somebody out there knows who makes it. Who knows how to contact GSK's ad agency?

yes, I too was hoping to find that chair. I did find a similar chair, although not nearly as sleek, from Lane home furnishings. It is the "Julia" Hi-Leg recliner and it does have bent wood arms but that is where the similarities end unfortunately. Certainly seems that there is enough interest in this chair for the company that came up with the "concept" to actually manufacture it.... and my husband laughed at me when I said I was going to try to find this chair. Seems I'm not the only one!

I thought I was nuts to see if anyone knew who the manufacturer of the chair in the Requip commercial was. Glad to see I am part of a new wave of internet junkies.

Everyone please watch the ad closely. I think there may be some special effects happening here. I think the reason that the chair is so slender and elegant, which is why we all like it so much, is because it actually doesn't have the mechanical pieces that allow it to be a recliner. The reclining action in the ad is so quick that I have not been able to get a good look. I think the film editing makes the chair appear to be capable of reclining when in fact it is a prop chair.

Yes, I too Googled the "chair in the Requip Commercial" and found this site with an entire discussion of the chair. Amazing that there are so many of us and that we've found each other. I am sad though that the chair isn't available commercially.

There is a nice recliner out there called "the perfect chair" that they sell at healthy back stores. It is pretty sleek but not as elegant as the one in the commercial. Its a little expensive though.

The Ekornes Stressless line is always pretty sleek, but they are recliners with ottomans.

That Billie chair is pretty close...I might look into that one.

The chair itself reclines, but the leg rest is an ottoman, not attached to the chair. And it's metal rather than wood frame. But it is sleek.

Please keep up the search everyone. We're bound to come up with something that is close enough, eventually. I have the commercial on tape. I have wanted that chair since the first time I saw it. I'm hopeful that something will come along. Maybe I'm being too particular, but suggestions I've seen just don't come close enough. But thanks, everyone, for your efforts.

Really too bad someone doesn't manufacture that chair. If the person who created this concept chair doesn't step up soon, I may just make a couple for myself. It's that good.

The reality is that those of us who love that chair is not a great enough number to demand a production run and custom made would be very expensive.

It's great to see so many others searching for the same lovely illusive chair. I have a picture of it in a Prevention ad. No visible means of adjustment can be seen ,so "Concept " is probably all it will ever be.

check out lazyboy's "carlyle" style # 464, a friend of mine has it in black and is pretty good-looking although is more upright in sitting position. he saw the chair in the commercial, too and now wants it.

My girlfriend has been looking for this chair for months with no success. I finally tried my trusty Google with the phrase "Chair in Requip Commercial" and it led me to this discussion. Amazing how many women out there have been so diligent in seeking this chair. I would agree with the comment that the agency which made this concept chair for the commercial would be wise to see the market potential in it and make real ones for those of us obsessed with obtaining one. I find it hard to believe that in the market driven world which we live in, these chairs aren't already being mass produced for us. Don't lose hope folks. It may just happen after all!

I was thrilled to find the comments and information regarding the chair in the Requip commercial. For your info - I first saw the ad and was interested in the meds for my mother who was diagnosed with restless leg syndrome. The drug has been great in allowing her to sleep better at nite than she has during her lifetime - and she is 93 years old. Anyhow, about the chair --- I have been searching for the chair and came across this contact point, extremely disappointed not to find a manufacturer of the chair. I too saw the similarity and found the Bjork chair and Sunny chair, also Billie but that has metal. The bentwood arms are definitely what makes this chair unique. Some manufacturer has to get info on all of us interested and see the marketability.....

I am laughing out loud, reading this. I have been driving my family and furniture sales people nuts. I saw the commercial and have been to every furniture store in Texas. I carry a hand drawn picture around. Asking people "have you seen anything like this?". Honestly Wal-Mart has a patio chair that has the same action... As the back reclines the foot rest comes up. It's so simple. Why do recliners all look like spongy beanbags that would take there toll on your back in a matter of 20 minutes. No, I want something tight, but loungey. It's so funny, I haven't seen the commercial in months, but I have this deep impression. Heck, I didn't even know what the name of the drug was.

I too looked all over for it!
FINALLY, I called Glasco, the company that makes REQUIP, I was informed that this was a one-of-a-kind-item, a CONCEPT chair made specifically for the commercial.
No one currently makes this chair; it might be something someone would want to bring to the attention of a furniture manufacture, as I am sure it would really sell, as a lot of my friends think it is reall KOOL TOO!

This makes me laugh! I have been obsessively searching for this chair, too. I TiVo'd it to watch the reclining process and made a still on my camera and have been taking it to every furniture place I can find, to no avail. Sign me up for the custom design. I want two!

I'm crushed to learn that this chair is a concept item! As sooon as I saw it, I knew it was exactly what I've been searching for for two years! It seems to me that SOMEONE created that chair, and certainly could make a fortune by putting it into production. If that ever happens, I want to know!

Finding this site is just too wild. My partner has had a mental lock on that chair since he first saw that commercial. I have brought home pics of the LayZBoy Carlyl, and other bentwood chairs, we've visited showrooms all over Virginia, sat in them, too mushy, no head support,wrong style, etc. Some smart custom furniture maker is bound to wake up and smell the dollar signs.

Many years ago when we lived in Marin County, California, we had an almost identical chair. It had a brown upholstery cover, Bentwood arms, a wooden lever on the side to change it from an upright chair to a recliner (the lever made the footrest pop up). When we moved we gave the chair to our daughter and son-in-law, and subsequentlly they disposed of it.
The minute I saw the Requip ad, fond memories came back, as it was one of the most confortable chairs we have ever had.
I emailed Requip to get info,; they never answered. I then phoned and was unable to get more than the answering "service".
So glad to hear that I am not the only one obsessed with finding this chair (recliner).

Hello Kindered Souls of "The Chair", even though I am late to the line up, I also have wanted that exact chair from the moment I first saw the add. This is from another short person with small living quarters who wants it in front of the fireplace.

I will keep in touch to see if some savvy designer/builder will make it available to us.

All drama aside, I guess that there is nothing that I can say about "the chair" that has not already been said. The sitting area of our bedroom remains unfilled as we were hoping to find something that really strikes our fancy: We too fell in love with the chair. Until we find something like it or something else entirely, we catnap on bean bags on the floor...

Quite a few years ago, I purchased a BackSaver zero-gravity chair that is similar to the chair in the commercial. It's the most comfortable and relaxing chair I've ever used and has been my "every day" chair for as many years as I've owned it, i.e., the only time I sit anywhere else is when I'm eating or at the PC.

Unfortunately, my chair is wearing out and more unfortunately, I can't replace it. The company has not only moved from Massachusetts to California, but must have changed hands because they no longer make the same models they once did. I cannot believe I found this website. Everytime that commercial comes on my father yells. "there's my chair" I have been looking for one for him for the past year. Glad to know the mystery has been solved. I did find one close to it in a store called "Indigo" in Anchorage AK. It was red, and had arm rests. There was a sign on it called Bavarian rocker-didn't make any sense but chair was very similar. The store was closed and I was on vacation and had no way of getting it home.

The closest I have been able to find is a Lafer chair. The model is Bjork. I found this one at advancefurniture.com
It is not exactly like THE chair and apparently only available in leather.

As a designer, I thought it would be an easy thing to find the chair. Even asked one of my clients who is a Glaxo Rep, to check into it for me. It is THE only recliner I could live with. I'm beginning to suspect that the base of the chair might be quite ugly...notice they never show it sitting on the floor? J. That chair just looks soooo comfortable and the style is perfect, what a drag it's fake. Made me wonder when I saved the image from the Requip.com site and zooomed on it. The fabric on the seat seems oddly rippled so makes sense it's a prop with the foot rest quickly attached. Oh well, glad I found it anyway. I've also had the image in my minds eye and just happened to catch the Ad tonight so I started searching. We get Country Living and the Requip site indicates they've advertised there so that may be where I saw it.

I have also been looking for this chair. I am a nurse and a Dr. of Naturopathy. I am astounded that the chair that is not available may be just the answer but the drugs are available but no magic bullet. The Zero Gravity chair looks good as well. Pricey though. Sure would love someone to make this chair. Simple and to the point. Very classey.

I want this chair also! With so many people wanting it someone has come out with one eventually. I use an inexpensive zero gravity knock off of the outdoor Lafuma. I got it from overstock.I padded,and sewed a slip cover to match my bedroom. It helps me SOO MUCH with aches and pains, but it doesn't look nice enough to put out in my living room!Antizero has a nice looking chair with a similar feel but also over $1000, and Homemedics has black leather type with massage built in but it has reviews that say it breaks down quicky.Ikea has a arm chair called Poang with a foot stool to match at a good price! If we bombard them with requests for them to adapt it to a zero gravity type recliner maybee, just maybee we can all get an affordable and good looking substitute!

I simply googled "requip" and "recliner" and here I am, part of a universe of consumers creating demand for an imaginary chair. Like Plato's notion of "bedness," Requip has captured the essence of "chairness"--but has it sold any Requip?

And here I thought I was the only one obsessed with this chair. It is just so beautiful. As the other posts have said, hopefully some enterprising designer/furniture maker will see that there is a market for this chair. I too cannot spend $3K+ on one piece of furniture, no matter how spectacular. BTW: my friend has restless leg syndrome, was prescribed Requip by her doctor, and she (and her husband) are now getting a good night's sleep.

I have a futon with similar bent/swooping arms in a cherrywood stain. It has a matching chair, but it's not nearly as elegant as the "concept" chair, plus it costs as much as the futon. I am going to check out all the sites mentioned.

Wow...I wish I could build furniture because a see a lucrative market for sleek reclining chairs. I won't tell you the lengths I have gone to find that Requip recliner. I even sent an email to GSK to aks them their going price for the concept chair. It was a "No Sale", don't lower yourself to begging like I did.

I have been looking for this chair since I first saw the commercial. I have restless leg syndrome and have tried requip. I was unable to take due to side effects. But the chair-- I KNOW would cure me. I need it! I am sad to hear it is a figment of someone's imagination. Please some furniture maker get to work.

"The Perfect Chair" is as close to the Requip chair as I've found. The problem with the Perfect Chair is that the whole chair rotates - not the traditional reclining action. Hence, I feel that it isn't so comfortable when sitting upright. Just my opinion.

I was truly boggled when I found this site! Amazing where Google can take you! Like the rest of you, I thought I was alone in my quest for THE CHAIR. Then when I saw that this chain dated back to August '05, I was even more surprised as I didn't think the ad had been running that long.

Anyway, I have a "three-degree" separation from someone in the furniture manufacturing business so I'm gonna see if all the interest exhibited here can inspire some interest on his part.

With no volume to listen to, I watched the ad and assumed Requip was a furniture company. To my surprise, I found it's not, but I found all of us are looking for THE chair. Somebody out there either find it or make it. You got customers!

Three weeks ago when NBC evening news did a segment on Requip, I was hoping to hear a story about THE CHAIR. Nothing. Just info on restless leg syndrome. For those who think it's all a fake, the Bjork and Billie recliners also tuck everything up under, the fine design we all want without the monolithic bulk.
So someone contact Lafer already and tell them to make the Billie with cabinet quality plywood arches instead of metal, and we would all be happily sending them thousands of dollars, right?

These comments have been going since 2005 - you would think someone, somewhere, would make this chair. I've checked out about all of the links and I think I'm settling for one of the jensen-lewis chairs.

I loved that chair from the moment I spotted it in the commercial (which is still run to this day here in Los Angeles).

There are lots of small furniture designers/makers in Los Angeles, and I am sure one of them, with enough orders in hand (maybe 200?) would be very interested in our business. But how to find someone? Perhaps a posting on Craigslist or some similar list in which we seek a furniture maker/designer?

Does anyone else have an affirmative idea?

I have searched the internet high and low for a good chaise or recliner with the right style for my apartment. The rls lounger really is one of the best designs I have seen.

As I read through the postings that began in 2005, I kept hoping someone would say "I found it!". But no one has said that to date. I hope no one gives up!

I'm not thrilled that this chair doesn't really exist, but I love it that so many are looking for it! Maybe someone will actually create a working one for us? I love mid-century design and this chair is reminiscent of that clean contemporary style.

I also stumbled upon this site in my quest for "the chair". Truly incredible that so many people want it and no one has created it at a price we commoners can afford.

OK, here is an idea. What if you take the Bjork chair (http://www.contemporaryfurniture.com/Catalog/Products/product_00002384_28.asp) remove the legs, and then get the cheap JCPenney non-recliner with the arched wood legs/armrests and then attach those to the Bjork chair? You could do all of that for under $1500 and have something very close to "The Chair". The Bjork looks as if the leg connections are pretty basic.

Just a thought. I am still looking too, but I'm not holding my breath anymore.

I too found this post by googling for THE chair. I don't think I could go 1600. Maybe if I sat in it I would change my mind, I have been thinking about having a chair made for me, I am 5' tall and nothing "ready made" really fits.

here in NYC ... I saw it again last night and I agree i has a great look but it would be very very hard to make work. The stresses and mechanics involved look like a serious challenge.

I joined what I now recognize as the Cult of the Requip Chair when I saw one of the first Requip TV ads; it's the only thing in the ad that I really notice but had to watch a couple of times to figure out what the ad was for so I could track down the chair. I assumed I couldn't afford it, so didn't hurry to follow up. Finally, I googled "Requip Chair" and found all of you like-minded lost souls. It's a shame how much time I spent tracking all of the clues to potential substitutes--nothing makes the cut. The overwhelming power of our collective desire should make that chair not only appear from the ether but also be incredibly comfortable! Eye candy with body candy, too!

I haven't tracked down the prices; I know I can't afford one now.

I have a very lightweight rocking recliner (nonswivel, bent wood arms and legs) w. adjustable ottoman of theirs that our family fights over to sit in and nap in. I bought it at Danish Inspirations in Hatfield MA. Their website doesn't include much of their collection, but does give contact info: http://www.danishinspma.com/index.html.

The Scandinavians seem to know how to do this kind of sleek, light furniture (probably made mostly w. woods imported to northern Europe from the US, manufactured into furniture, and sold back to us at significant prices)! The reclining mechanism on our chair is simple and elegant and works well, with occasional adjustment.

I will contact them about our Requip Chair. Does GSK have to get a royalty for every chair manufactered, if we use that name? Maybe we should just call it the Ad Chair--anyone who has yearned for it would recognize the reference!

Alas, we should not hold our collective breath waiting for our chair to materialize from the ether either from this or any other promise. Now that I've adjusted the ranking of my dream chair on my wish list to just before the Lamborghini, I guess I'll have to get back to real life.

Just as so many have done...I sprang to the computer after seeing the ad. What beautiful lines that chair has! Classical lines of clean and simple elements. So unlike any other recliner I have seen to date. I'd like one too!

The difference is I have a professional interest in the chair and can make it happen. I am a chair designer with some 30 years experince. I was so interested because I am designing a reclining mechinism at this time for one of my chair designs.

Research showed that just as Glasco stated it is a "concept" chair. As it is pictured it can not recline; a person would have to climb and crawl to get into the chair. Great for ads, but not so for living rooms.

With so much interest in the ad concept I have decided to develop a simulair chair using my reclining mechinism. The first step is to build a 3-D computer model of the new design. Accurate to thousandths of an inch, this proves the design will work and shows how it will really look. This is done and I am very happy with the results!

OK-I'm just another Requip chairaholic posting my keen desire for great design at a reasonable price. I can't figure out why after two years of people begging for it, this design has yet to materialize. As far as the reclining mechanism, it appears to be similar to the zero gravity chairs...come on, furniture designers! Get with the program! Build us this chair and we will come in droves with $$!!

I have been looking for this chair for a wile now. I even carry a magazine picture on my purse at all times. This is bigger than the i-phone frenzy. We do not care about how the ad makes the chair look like it reclines, NO, we only care about finding someone that will make our dream come true.

I've tried to find Anthony Criqui to no avail. He said he could make this chair, mechanism and all , for us. Where are you Anthony?????
