What type of new years resolution do you have for your home? Come February I will be moving into a new place, so design and layout issues have been weighing heavy on my mind. Symmetry and balance can create for a very comfortable space, and while decor does not always have to come in pairs, it certainly helps maintain that feeling of symmetry.
Perfect symmetry can appear too organized for some - a more organic approach to balance can be a more attractive route for those who prefer not to work with pairs. What is your take?

I am loving that sofa.
Too much symmetry gets boring! The best part of that image is the fact that the Jonathan Adler pillows are complementary but not identical. In our bedroom, I achieved a similar effect by using identical nightstands [actually, side tables] and identical lamp shades but two different lamp bases that are the same height:

The result, I think, is harmonious but not entirely predictable.
Nice elements, but having everything in matched-pairs symmetry makes a room look like you bought it all on one shopping trip. It has an impersonal lobby feeling.
Why does there seem to be a cowhide rug in every single one of these collages?
7 out of 15, I will try and "slowdown" with the cowhides. I do love the texture and organic shape they provide.:)
please tell that pic was photoshopped ...
