A friend is planning her son's summer birthday party and asked me for good cake ideas. Not being a notable baker, I turned to you guys for the creativity. I'm sending her this gallery of creative kids' cakes from reader submitted My Party posts. The cakes range from difficult to totally do-able. She may not want to make one of these exact cakes but they're sure to provide ideas and inspiration.

omg they are adorable! i love cake but looking this cute i might not dare to cut them :D
we always make birthday-cakes for my husbands sons in the form of their age-number. I am not yet very good at baking so i buy simple chocolate cake in different shapes an arange them to numbers :) covered with loads of white- or milk chocolate and decrated with m&ms and candles they look pretty good for this little work. the boys celebrate big with their mom and are ok with simple chocolate cake when they celebrate with us.
maybe I try one of this cute cakes as the decorating/frosting is really fun - the baking itself is my bigger problem :D

Hope this helps! thanks.
I made a robot cake for my son's 1st birthday and I have to say it was even cuter and easier than the one pictured above. I followed directions here:

Obviously you don't have to use a cake mix--all you need is a 9x13 cake of any kind. I used carrot cake with cream cheese frosting which spread beautifully. It was a seriously impressive cake, even with my extremely limited decorating skills.
I made this cake for my nephew a couple years ago. http://gusandotherthings.blogspot.com/2010/01/if-you-want-4-year-old-boy-to-love-you.html
My very very favourite kids' cakes were by flour girl/flourpatch bakery. Sadly, they are no more... :-( What was so special about their cakes were that they combined cookies and cakes.... they decorated cookies (often on lollipop sticks) and stuck them on the cake.
I never lived in the same city as the bakery, and so had to copy the idea as best I could. Jeri Gottlieb though, had amazing cakes: a beautiful 2-tiered blue buttercream cake with farm animals, or another one with wild animals.
Here is an example:

I made my son a 3-D dinosaur cake one year, with white "meat" and dark "meat"; follow the links on this page and you'll find cake recipes too. Instead of the plain golden cake recipe, I made a lime-coconut cake (more dino-like I thought). Be careful though, because putting buttercream on a cut cake surface is difficult (you get crumbs in the buttercream).

I made my kids and 2 step daughters a rainbow cake last night. It was amazing! We have 5 birthdays in June/July, and this cake was wonderful for everyone. They each got their favorite color in a layer of cake. It didn't take very long at all, since the layers are so thin, the baking time for each is only about 10 minutes.
