Location: Capitol Hill Neighborhood — Seattle, Washington

Residing on the first floor of a cheerful, tight-knit old brick building on Seattle’s Capitol Hill, Abigail’s one-bedroom condo oozes pattern and color: from the moment you enter the 800-square-foot home, it’s graphic wallpaper and dashes of hot pink, crimson, and mint green. During the day she may be busy working as a marketing specialist at Microsoft, but at home she’s a blogger at In Pleasant Company, a quilter, and consummate hostess.

Abigail’s art collection has been amassed over the last decade in both San Francisco and Seattle. “I have to say, big art can feel impressive,” she says. “Even if you can’t afford a big original piece, I think one large item on the wall — like a framed poster, a painting, or a quilt — can go much further to anchor a room than a lot of random little pieces.” A moody, underwater self-portrait by Ann Piper and an oversize photograph of a pink-frosted cupcake by Jim Riswold reside in the bedroom. In the living room, an Eric Swangstu rendition of Mount Rainier’s famously fickle weather system is hung over an antique settee that Abigail re-covered in luminous black velvet. She explains, “I aim to create a space that’s clean and relaxing, with an interesting story. I’d characterize my style as modern romantic.”

When Abigail first bought the condo, it was painted putty-beige with one pumpkin-orange accent wall. Though no stranger to color, she wanted the walls to serve as a backdrop to her art. It seemed appropriate in Seattle’s rainy climate to brighten the walls a bit with a well-chosen white: She opted for one with a few drops of gold, which adds the faintest glimmer of warmth. She then covered one of the main walls in the living area with a graphic black-and-white wallpaper by Geoff McFetridge, depicting more drawn human faces than you could count — which delights her guests to no end.

The open floor plan at the front part of the condo — a small but efficient kitchen overlooking the dining area, followed by the living room — was one of the main reasons she fell in love with the space. The cozy bedroom is tucked in the back, with an attached patio and a large closet for her shoe habit. When asked what she’s most proud of in her first home, Abigail says, “I like to host parties. When my home is filled with my loved ones having a good time, that’s when I’m most proud of my space.”

Bold pattern, unexpected color, and a dynamite art collection? Quite pleasant, indeed.
