Lite Brite Neon Studio
This booth really practiced what it preached. In a show-wide trend of some things here being "more art than an art show", this installation could have been transported directly from a Chelsea gallery. While perhaps not terribly practical for the home, what about wall-mounting two of their "table lamps" on either side of a modern bed or above a sideboard in a dining room?

Angela Adams
While her more famous rugs go a little overboard for me at times, here the rug and purse queen Angela Adams showed a lovely line of toned down textiles by the yard that would work extremely well recovering some iconic MCM pieces. Inspiring color palettes.
Tom Kirk
Masculine modern-meets-40s glam: Brit Tom Kirk showed how to do it with style. Part lab-glass, part frozen showerhead, the sharp shapes of the crystal tubes kept these from being just another chandelier.

What Angela Adams rugs are overboard? I haven't seen one yet that I didn't think was lovely. When shopping for modern rugs, I see so many that look like one of those ugly sweaters Cosby wore on his show in the 80's. The Adams rugs, to me, are a breath of fresh air.
Well, anything from her Couture and/or Utopia collections, for starters.
It's a matter of personal taste, but I prefer a quieter rug.
But yes, there are louder ones out there, too.
Wow. In seeing how the tubes are used by Tom Kirk. I did see this type of mini chandelier in a Los Angeles house built in 1932 with its original fixtures intact. Thanks.
patrick(too) - I went to her website since I realized I may have only seen a limited selection at stores. There were a lot of rugs on there I have not seen - and now I understand the overboard comment a bit better. The Couture ones are definitely the loudest. They are still pretty, but maybe look more like art I would hang on the wall than something I would have under my coffee table.
I have neutral furnishings and simple wood cocktail/end tables in my living room. I bring in color with plants and art on the walls. I want a new area rug that is modern and interesting but without too much color. I'm thinking about the Angela Adams Mammy rug in Black/White. http://www.designpublic.com/shop/angela-adams/4117
I like the style of the Hazel rug but don't want any chocolate in the rug.
Is the Mammy too loud or is it timeless? I think I like it, but sometimes it's hard to tell until something is actually on your own floor in your own space. Anybody have any other rug manufacturers they would recommend for similar styles?
I like that rug, because it seems like a modified zebra, and I loves me some zebra!
In the application you describe (everything neutral, and the sole punch comes from the rug), I do indeed like many of her rugs, the one you are considering in particular.
It also partially depends how much of the rug does or doesn't show, too.
Modern Rug Company (I think that's the name) an alternate source, and check also the rugs at Room & Board and Storehouse. Also love the Amagansett Collection at ABC Carpet & Home.
If higher end a possibility, Stark is the way to go.
The Angela Adams rugs pictured remind of the graphic pattern used in the early '80s by fashion designer Vivienne Westwood for her Pirate collection.
patrick(too), I loves me some zebra too! I didn't even think of the Mammy as a modified zebra, but you are so right.
I was considering an 8'x10' because that is the size rug I currently have. If we had hardwoods, I might do a 5'x8'. As it is, we have sealed concrete (loft) which looks okay but isn't all that wonderful on the feet. Now, we have the 8' side along the edge of the couch. Our couch is a taupe ultrasude Mitchell Gold sofa and is almost 8' wide. Along one 10' side we have two armless sidechairs. At one of the corners of the rug we have a large armchair at an angle facing the couch. Our cocktail table is a couple feet from the couch and is rather large. Even so, we are left with about 5'x8' of rug on one side of the cocktail table. We use this area to hang out on the floor. It seems kind of silly to sit on the floor when you have a large coach, 2 sidechairs and an armchair, but we like playing Trivial Pursuit on the floor while we sip our glasses of bourbon on the cocktail table. I actually get better at Trivial Pursuit the more bourbon I drink, and the husband gets worse, so I always win.
I'll check out the other sources you mentioned. My budget is around $1500, so I'm not sure how high-end I can go. My husband set the budget lower, but I convinced him that a great rug could 'make' the room and that a good quality rug would last for years. He bought it, and without drinking any bourbon first.
Thanks so much for your suggestions!

Most better rug merchants will let you try one or more rugs in your home before committing.

If you have the room, I'd strongly suggest going with the biggest size you can fit/afford.
Especially in an open plan, your rug becomes your "room".
Michelle, I was just about to make the same suggestion as Patrick. You mentioned that you are in a loft so I am going to assume that your sofa, coffee/side tables, chairs are part of a larger space that might also include your dining 'room', kitchen, office, possibly even bedroom. In situations like that, I love large rugs, which help define each space. If you go for an 8'x10' or even larger rug that makes it more like a living 'room' even though it is really just part of a larger space. Ignore the rules about furniture being either all on or all off of the rug. I always thought those rules were silly. Get as much rug as you want, especially if you like playing games on the floor. I have hardwood floors and while they are beautiful, sometimes I miss having carpet for that same reason. When I was young I used to love leafing through magazines on the floor propped up on my elbows, or watching movies on the floor with an oversized bowl of popcorn and lots of large pillows!
That Mammy rug is gorgeous and I think it would look fab on concrete floors in an open floorplan used to define your 'living room' area.

I absolutely LOVE the Angela Adams Architex collection, and would like to purchase some of the Adriana fabric to re-cover a chair. Unfortunately, the website only sells in large quantities to people in the trade. Does anyone know where I can get this fabric by the yard?
Thanks!

The Couture rugs are why I fell in love with Angela Adams in the first place. They're just gorgeous works of art to me. And I now bought my third Angela Adams purse at ICFF (wholesale!). Yes, I've drunk the Kool-Aid.
Thanks patrick and alison - you both make good points about a large area rug's ability to define a space. Alison - my living space is about 26'x19' and we have our 'living room' furniture in about 1/2 the space nearest the tall windows and the kitchen(ette) is on one end of the space with our dining table adjacent to it. We've squeezed a desk/office area in there too but it doesn't feel crowded. The bedroom is separate.
Ruth - I *love* the Angela Adams handbags. I'm so jealous you have 3, and even more envious that you got one wholesale! I'm definitely going to be shopping for one for Summer. I'm thinking about the Carrie canvas handbag in the Tegan pattern - lavendar. Ahhhh, handbags...
