Name: Brian
Location: Park Slope, Brooklyn
Size: 700 sqft, one bedroom
Years lived in: 1.5 years
"It's not easy for a herder and a nester," says Brian, as he recounts the downsizing from a spacious rental to his current smaller coop in Park Slope. It's not really the space, but the ability to accommodate his object fetish.
Brian has had to give away many of his prized possessions, but the dream/plan for a country house provides a great outlet, and a great excuse for putting a lot of stuff in storage.
Now that he can see the floors, walls and closets, Brian is ready to take on improving the apartment's bones. Plans for the apartment include replacing all current light fixtures with antique, salvaged pieces, stripping all the doors, replacing all the window treatments and painting all the walls.
Whereas in his last apartment--AT visited Brian in 2005--the woodwork and pottery served as "the jewels of the apartment," here Brian says the light fittings will serve this role. Brian promises to limit any and all additional decoration to some paintings--"framed, to snazz it up without being overly cluttered."
Stay tuned, as we will be back to visit Brian again once his improvements taken shape.

I love your new place, Brian. It's so comfy looking.
My favs are the purple and burgundy chairs.
Please show pics after (if) you paint.
Oh yeah... love all the antiqueish looking pieces.
I kinda want to go shopping in this apartment. Do you take AmEx? Love so much about it.
Wonderfuly warm and inviting Brian! I myself have the same object fetish, and commend you on the recent purge, i know its tough! The danish style sofa, artwork and Dining chairs are my Favs. I agree with you that being able to see the architectural details is helping your cause. Given the vintage look of the apartment being able to appeciate them only adds to the charm of the furnishings! Great Space!
Is that a Borge Mogensen leather sofa???!!! Holy mackeral, it's SO SO SO gorgeous. If you ever decide you want to put it "in storage", I'd be happy to let you keep it in my living room!
Great apartment, Brian. Thank you for sharing.
Love the use of plants throughout the apartment!
This beautiful home has the whole package - wonderful rooms, furniture and artwork and the rugs add an heirloom (but not stuffy) quality.
It will be interesting to see this eveolve. I hope we get a chance too!
I am in love with those kitchen chairs.
Yeah, the sofa. Wow. I could nap on that.
Great apartment! Love the warmth and all the plants. We share a love of the exact same plants and I also own that little red box from the Hong Kong Peninsula Hotel. Can't wait to see your paint choices.
I need a coffee table exactly like that. Can you tell me where you got it, or what the style is called? It looks like a shorter version of something traditional.
The apartment is very nice and stylish, but come on - in what alternative universe would 700 sq. ft be called a "small" one-bedroom apartment, especially going by the NYC standards?
Very warm and cozy, but still bright and airy. I love all of your plants!
I love the chest in the kitchen most of all.
!!! How did I not notice the Ben Shahn drawing (is it original?) the first time I looked at this tour?!
Probably because I was too busy drooling over the Borge Mogensen sofa....
Sigh.
I've never commented on a house tour before, even the ones I've really liked, but I'm moved to comment on this one because it's so lovely. It's not what I'd necessarily do in my own home (I'd like a little less clutter on the chests, for example) but It's obvious that this is a real home which is comfortable yet well thought out and beautiful. It's an example of what those of us without unlimited budgets can do - original, not too stylized, cozy and beautiful. Nice work Brian.
willie nelson is a nice touch!
anyone know what the ink drawing is?
heyheykatielady, if you're asking about this one, the artist is Ben Shahn.
Great style and Willie Nelson too! Wow!
