Name: Kara & James
Location: Bedford, New Hampshire
Size: 2,700 square feet
Years lived in: 10 months — owned
Who else lives here? Finn (23 months), Gavin (6 months), Great Dane Dory and our Lab/Golden named Peach
Kara and James bought this contemporary fixer upper 10 short months ago. Kara, a city person, and James favoring a more secluded, country lifestyle compromised on a location between the two in Southern New Hampshire. Their home is isolated on over two acres of wooded land, and a 10 minute drive to downtown Manchester.
If it is not clear from the photos, Kara's favorite color is green. She has a hard time picking one shade so she has chosen different shades of green — mostly of the yellow green variety — for many of the rooms throughout her home. The exception being her kitchen which is painted a pale (but not powdery) blue. It's a color she used in a bathroom of a previous house. I can relate to falling hard for a color and wanting it to be on at least one of my walls, always.
They have a designated play area for the boys so they can keep their living room orderly and relaxing for the adults. Kara is a bargain hunter and has been able to acquire most items in her home through family members or from the Internet. One lovely piece worth mention is the bar cart in the living room. She found this on eBay and drove to Connecticut with her mother to snag it . Her leather couch and chair are both Craigslist finds and much of the art hanging throughout her home is of her own creation.
Apartment Therapy Survey:
Our Style? Mid-century modern meets I-have-two-little-kids-and-two-big-dogs. Anything I buy has to be comfortable and cleanable AND look good!
What is your greatest inspiration? Color, and usually the color green. For me, there is nothing worse than being surrounded by white walls. Everything comes alive — whether it is furniture, artwork or accessories — when placed up against a colorful wall.
Favorite Element: The high ceilings in the living room and the large windows throughout the house. I love that when I look outside any window all I see is green. I also love both of my boys rooms — they are super colorful and fun.
Biggest Challenge: The exterior! There are so many flowers, plants, trees and bushes on this property and it is extremely overwhelming. This was our first year seeing what kinds of flowers we have and while watching them bloom at different times was fun, next year we will definitely do some streamlining. (We immediately got rid of the koi pond and some dying trees.) Don't even get me started on the pool.
What Friends Say: They usually say they love the colors and that it is very "me."
Biggest Embarrassment: I have a long list: the living room fireplace and ceiling fan, the dog hair and drool covering every surface, the foyer light, my master bathroom…
Proudest DIY: We had a leak in our master bedroom closet this summer which prompted us to rip out the wall to wall carpet (we had it bound into an area rug since it was still in good condition) and install hardwood floors. Jim found the flooring on clearance at Lowe's because the style was being discontinued and installed it himself (I LOVE having a handy husband.) I removed the wallpaper and painted the walls (green, of course). There are a few things left to do (replace the vertical blinds) but we're really happy with the way it turned out.
Biggest Indulgence: My rugs are my biggest indulgence even though I bought them all at deep discounts. I am a bit obsessed with Company C rugs because of their amazing designs and uncompromising quality. They used to have tent sales every fall where I scavenged the damaged section and landed some major deals. Unfortunately they no longer have the tent sales but now you can find their rugs and pillows every so often at HomeGoods.
Best Advice: Surround yourself with things you love and you'll love your surroundings.

Shaw's Original Fir...
I wish I was a toddler growing up in this house! Just lovely.
The living room furniture placement does not look all that inviting, though.
I'd create two seating areas, moving the fantastic tree chairs to the fireplace, with a small table between them.
I'd switch the two end tables, putting the modern look one by the armchair, and the traditional one with the woven top by the tree chairs.
I'd leave the couch in the same place, but add two small upholstered, plush stools on the opposite side of the coffee table (small stools make great kid chairs).
I might move the armchair to where the tree chairs are now, but I can't see enough of the layout to know if that would work.
I'm guessing the current arrangement is the "put child in middle of rug while grownups sit in chairs around him and chuckle at his antics" set up.
This looks like a fresh and airy bit of heaven.
This house makes me smile-- You have the loveliest views-- So lucky! I'd love to come visit you for coffee! (I promise I won't make off with your mcm barcart, but I AM coveting it...)
I do have to say that I'd love to see a different area rug in the dining room-- the green/camel scroll pattern doesn't go with that scheme at all. I'd move it to the upstairs playroom and consider either moving the blue patterned rug into the dining room (which still wouldn't coordinate with the darling art/tablecloth combo), or, even better, putting a more neutral (no pattern) rug under the table. Also, maybe a natural, neutral drum shade or conical pendant grouping (woven wood veneer type? http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/dc/lighting/lighting-5-wood-veneer-pendants-trend-watch-127607). I like the industrial fixture, but it doesn't marry well with your awesome chairs and they deserve to stand out. :-/
*And we have a Curious George plushie, too! He's well-loved. :)
Thank you for sharing your home with us.
Nice. I made a comment on the loveliness of the home, but it seems AT decided to delete it because I also mentioned the mistake they made of listing the homeowner's name wrong in the post.
Elankat, me too! I said that I loved the colors and made the same observation, and the post was deleted. From comments on other posts I gather that this is happening quite often. Not cool, AT.
So much to love in this place!
Lovely home, nice choice of wall colours, and nice balance between family considerations and your own design likes. Colours are cool, the blue is a definitely a winner in the kitchen. Looking at some of those lovely soaring walls, particularly in the living room, they seem to be crying out for an art/picture collection to fill up some of those spaces to make them look lived in too. Overall, love it...
Great home indeed. I also do not like this latest move to delete posts that are sometimes critical of the AT staff. It is especially interesting considering that people here sometimes say very silly or nasty things about the generous people who share their homes with us.
Really the home is looking so beautiful, and i liked it so much,

I love those floors. The overall feel of the house is bright and relaxed. Very nice.
Looks like a fun home to grow up in. I particularly love the bright green used in the living room. It's welcoming and invigorating.
I love the green in the living room. I know you mentioned that the flooring was discontinued but I'm curious what kind of wood they are. Beautiful home!
I love the tree fabric on the 2 chairs in the living room. I think it's IKEA. I had plans to hang a panel of that in our sunporch, but haven't done it yet. Every time I see that pattern, it makes me smile. I really like your living room, and the color of the kitchen is divine.
No dane pictures??
Let's give AT the benefit of the doubt and assume they fixed the mistake and then deleted the posts so as not to confuse other readers. Nevertheless, a simple "thanks for the heads-up!" comment would have sufficed.
I didn't think I was a huge fan of green, but I love all the colors in this house. Very fresh and open looking.
Also, I'd never heard of Company C before, but within ten minutes of seeing them mentioned in this post, I'd purchased from them what promises to be the perfect rug for my living room -- which happened to be on sale for 50% off, plus I got a $50 discount for joining the email list. Thanks for the tip, Kara!
Bonnie - Congrats!!! You will be thrilled - their rugs are DIVINE. Best, kara
Oh, they live in my neighborhood! I just moved into an apartment but my parents' home will always be "home." I should find and visit this cute little place.
I'd gladly trade some vintage green glass for your lovely lamp on the sideboard in the third photo. Can you share the source for that lamp? Thanks!
Your home is beautiful, so unique and looks like a wonderful place to live.
I especially love your son's room, can I ask where you got the Shark name plate hung above your Stokke Sleepi? That is inspired.
@firespitter - Sorry, I traded a fern for that lamp - no way am I giving it up!
@jocelynaus - Thank You! My hugely talented brother in law actually made the shark so it is a one of a kind.
Lovely home! Kind of a strange comment, but it looks like the Stokke crib in your son's room has the old mattress. They were recalled about 2 1/2 years ago. You can call them up and they'll just pop a new, larger one in the mail. Oh my god, I just became one of those weird blog commenters.
I love everything about this house... I am actually planning to steal your color scheme for my own house :). The green and teal look so good together. The kids rooms are one of my favorite parts.
What a happy looking home. Just love the bar cart and credenza. Great kitchen, too. What is that countertop material? Perfect balance of black & white...
i usually don't like contemporary homes because people try to make traditional furnishings and cabinetry work but you've gone in the right direction and it looks great
@greermydear - Not weird at all! I called Stokke as soon as I saw your post and the new mattress arrived today (with two free sheets!). THANK YOU.
Love your home! I'm wondering what color your kitchen walls are - I think we have the same granite countertops and I cannot figure out a color, but I liked the blue you have. Thanks!!
