Smart Solution. We're recently infatuated with the idea of flip-up kitchen cabinet doors. They'd save space in our galley kitchen and allow the cabinets to remain open when busy in the kitchen. The one pictured above is from Allmilmö but even IKEA carries a few flip-up models. Via: Core77 and Luxury Housing Trends...

Flip-ups cabinets are great... assuming that you are tall enough to close the flipped up door when it is fully open!
I am and I think it's a great idea!
I'd like a flip up door for my bedroom.
I like a more vintage look.
Love it. Though I was told by a cabinetmaker that the hinges for the flip-up doors are sturdier than the ones that for the doors that hinge out and up. He said they tend to break.
JonathanB, I have a double-decker set of flip up cabinets in my kitchen, and I think even Shaquille Oneal would need a stepladder to flip down the upper cabinets!
be careful when you open them, items may have shifted during flight.
I've been trying to find a cabinet like this -- but MUCH-MUCH deeper so that I can store media equipment in it (dvd player, stereo, etc.) under the ceiling mounted projecter. Anyone seen anything similar.
Yeah, something tells me that standing 5'3" puts this literally out of my range. I already need to keep a folding step stool permanently in the kitchen.
I actually have the flip up ikea cabinet. it was pretty difficult to assemble but it works like a dream. i love it.
I'm with cmcinnyc on this one. I have enough problems with the height of a standard cabinet. The idiots mounted the handles in the middle of the doors instead of the bottom.
I had the Ikea cabinet pictured in a rental and shortly after I moved it the pneumatic hardware got screwed up and the cabinet had to either be forced closed cockeyed or left open. Could have been the install or flipping it open to vigorously, but if it's a high traffic cabinet I'd think carefuly about using Ikea.
not user friendly - how're you supposed to reach up to push the panel ABOVE the cabinet?
My husband and I are currently installing an Ikea kitchen. I love this idea too, BUT, all my friends who have also installed Ikea kitchens (and love them) have told me not to go with that feature. That hinge breaks faster than you can say "hey, look at my awesome new flip-up cabinets!"
