This year, we've had one of the hottest summers on record, but it's a rare treat that we get to cool off in the water. A team of designers, planners, and architects has conceptualized a solution to this problem in the form of a public works project that utilizes our virtually unswimmable city waterways.

A cross shape is the key component of the plan, as the pool can be cordoned off into areas for the separate functions of sports, laps, lounge, and kids. When longer lengths are required for swim meets and such, sections can be combined to accommodate all sorts of needs. Another great feature of the design is that many layers of filtering materials passively clean river water to safe levels for human use, so the structure basically acts like a massive strainer.
Although there are currently no plans to build such an amenity for New York, a movement toward starting the project is well underway. For more information, visit + Pool to see how you can get involved.

Nifty! Needs a shade structure, though. And a bit less total exposure.
Agreed! Shade structures, trees, umbrellas, something, or we'd all be frying like bacon out there... :)
Love the idea though. Has anybody been out to the barge pool yet? that's been around for a few years now... It's kind of the same thing!
Manhattan used to be a swimmable shoreline. It's a freaking shame we need this. Oh what we hath wrought.
The only place to pee is in the pool?
It *is* a giant filter, after all.
Don't forget your 5,000 SPF sunblock!
Is this for real?
Cool idea. But as a "public works project," I think I'll pass.
isn't this anchored in the bronx this summer?
Just pee in the East River to dilute the liquid pollution. The liquid pollution of the East River.
A giant X marks the spot by New York. Nice...
this is sort of like BADESCHIFF in berlin.
I love it what a great idea... Lets swim!!!
Kinda like a TugTub for the entire city. nice. I always though floating Hot Tubs would be all the rage in the future.
The problem with that design is that it requires four lifeguards for full coverage and response time.
Yay I want!! Do it now!
It's my birthday! Gimme!!
