Even as a renter, Doug Meyer is not afraid of color. His New York City apartment on the West Side has been painted wall to wall and floor to ceiling in the kind of bright hues most home dwellers would only dream of. The interior designer is not only bold but also restless.
Last summer with the help of his brother and design partner Gene Meyer, he dreamed up a way to add more color to his home using a truly inspired take on traditional wallpaper. His bold use of 21 colors (edited down from an original 61) as a renter, has me dreaming and scheming a way to add some punch to my home.
"...together they began papering over Doug's bedroom walls with colored sheets of 8½-by-11-inch paper, each digitally printed with one of 223 designs. "The idea was a riff on early wallpapers from the 1400s, which were actually small squares of paper printed with wood blocks," Gene explains."

Commercial Flour Sa...
The house sure photographs well :). Quite like it, but wouldn't do this to my house ..
Amazing!!! So much inspiration here ~
Works for a photo spread, but I wouldn't last a day in a house like that. Maybe it's my latent autism, but I don't think I'd ever get anything done in a space that offers so much VISUAL INPUT OMG IT'S EVERYWHERE.
I can see the wrinkles on the paper on the walls of this apartment (on the picture) let alone in person - I could never stand that in my own space... I go around my house and sand the walls if I see a miniscule particle glued to the wall with paint.... Honestly, are people so bored, or have so much time in their hands????
In the immortal words of Project Runway's Tim Gunn "That's a lotta look!"
I would love a pic of that framed as art. It might be a bit much to live with on a day-to-day basis, but then in these long, dark, gray winters of New England just looking at the pics lifted my spirits.
The palette of cool greens and blues with the pop of orange on the walls is gorgeous! Such dramatic and inspiring decor
This looks so amazing! I don't know if I can have this much color and make it look good, but I'll definitely be adding pops of colors!
particularly love the first 2 images - such a beautiful palette!
Head hurts! ;^) (Interesting but waaayy too much for me, I'm afraid.)
@Alphabear, your comment made me smile.
Also, I think I could take this in a small area, but I'm one of those people who needs a place for the eye to rest, just chill, drink a beer, hmmm maybe I have a lazyeye.
Kelly Wearstler on acid...
stunning !
This is completely fabulous and would only be correctly executed by an interior designer our inferiors couldn't accomplish something so artistic and beautiful with this much complexity...the masses would have a mad clown home if they attempted this fo'sho!
* us inferiors.... ( meaning me!)
@Username26: I kind of agree with anusha73 in the sense that this is clearly not perfectly executed, which detracts from the overall effect. It doens't look too bad in the pictures, but having wrinkly wallpaper like that would drive me crazy, too. The door in the last picture, especially, looks like the wallpaper is ready to fall off the first time someone slams it shut in a fit of rage, which in a house with so much visual madness coming at you from every angle seems a likely scenario ;)
Couldn't stand it for a minute there. But since I don't live there, glad the owners (renters) are happy.
It's fun to look at. And I suppose it's good to have the courage of your convictions and just go for it. But if I were his landlord, I'd have a conniption fit. Imagine being the next tenant. You couldn't pay me enough to move in there.
LOVE the first photo - HATE the second equally as much. I think it's a genius way to cover apartment walls (assuming that the removal leaves no mark).
About the last picture - it's labeled as a hallway leading to a bathroom. I'm hoping it's mislabeled. If not, then either they have a security lock on the *outside* of their bathroom or that's the entry way and it leads directly to the bathroom, from where the picture is taken. Either way is horrifying...
:)
Love it.
This West Side apartment certainly is a bright side to behold! We're not certain that we could live in this space, but we certainly like to admire it.
Not for me but it isn't for me so there! :o}~. I really do love color-this is just a bit of an explosion for me but you know what, kuddos to you for loving it and being brave enough to do this in a rental.
Do you dream in color!? :o)
