You know, I always love the looks of those clear plastic containers like the first photo, but in actual use, they are quickly smeared with toothpaste droplets, liquids from the bottles, water from damp hands, and dust from makeup and towel lint, and they look just gross in no time -- AND they are not easy to clean. (Well, they spiff up if soaked in hot soapy water overnight if you like going to the trouble every other week or so!) Forewarned...
I completely agree SherryBinNH. My issue is hairspray floating about the room and ultimately creating a film that attracts everything you mentioned. Ucck.
I have the little rabbit dish and adore it! It holds my engagement ring whenever it's not on my finger:

The grass toothbrush holder from Urban Outfitters is pretty cool (they have neat stuff). But there might be a cleaning issue with that too. I have my toothbrush in a cup that has to be washed out once a week because of the dripping water.
I prefer not to buy too many accessories that are made just for one use or for a very specific kitchen, office or bath use (i.e. qtip holder), usually not made well and often difficult to clean, ends up being a throw away at some point.
I have my qtips and cotton balls in a very pretty crystal dish with a cover that I bought from a thrift store. My toothbrushes are in a white mug with a black baroque print on it that I bought for a couple of bucks from Ross. Sponge holders are white ceramic pieces bought from the Macy's clearance table. Pen holder on desk is a glass skull tealight holder, also from Ross from $5. Pen/scissor/catch all holder at office is an artistic silver wine coaster from Soha in Honolulu (that one wasn't cheap but is beautiful.
Bathroom bargain under $10? How about handmade soap from Silver Firs Farm ;)
I agree glass is the smartest choice for bathroom storage. I have beautiful glass apothacary style jars in varying sizes and heights and its almost always really affordable if you know where to shop. If the jars are starting to look a little dingy I can pop them in my dishwasher, and an hour later they are sparkling clean again.
Plastic just always seems to look old in no time.
SherryBinNH - I appreciate the warning! I was planning on picking up one of those organizers next time I was at The Container Store.
This afternoon, I just bought an ice tray at an Asian market for making tube shaped ice. I've already installed tubes of lipstick and mascara in it.
I use blue and white cachepots - from a hardware store and intended to put flowerpots in - to hold toothbrushes etc. These can be washed in the dishwasher, which I like.
I'm looking for a nice-looking ceramic egg tray to hold earrings. Anthropologie has one, but it's only 6 egg-spaces.
I've always admired
I just did a "trayscape" in my bathroom using some acrylic canisters from Target. I wish I would have know they were so much cheaper at The Container Store :(

If I had in my bank account what I've spent on bathroom counter "organizers" I would be able to take a safari vacation. I purchased a larger medicine cabinet so that everything is hidden away. Although some of the accessories are very nice to look at, it's not worth all the maintenance.

@SilverFirsFarm, would you like to share with the rest of the class?
Dulcibella, I got a ceramic egg tray for 9 eggs from Ross.
Wasn't a one off because I've seen them there on more than one occassion.
@kmk we have a really cool outlet type home decor shop in utah called TaiPan, but I believe they get most of their items from the same supplier as Save_on_crafts.com, most jars are under $20
i don't know. i've never had a problem keeping my acrylic containers for the cs clean. wipe them off with a damp paper towel or bleach wipe and you're good to go. also you don't ONLY have to use it for qtips. use it for anything that will fit in that tiny little jar.
