As luck would have it our air conditioner froze up today and we're not happy about it. It's going to be quite the scorcher in Philadelphia this weekend and we're frantically considering purchasing as many fans as our bank account will allow. Even though we're not being picky about the fans we purchase (just as long as they blow hard) we are dreaming of well designed fans.
We have several box fans from our local hardware store, and luckily our house has ceiling fans! This experience has really got us thinking about investing in a staple, modern fan. If we purchase one good quality and good looking fan — we won't have to run out to the hardware store the next time the A/C is on the fritz.

Is the Charly fan available anywhere in the US? I have been scouring the Net since last year and can't find it.
I am very curious about that Dyson fan. I want one, but I want to see one in action. I just bought my Dyson Vac and it doesn't really do anything more then comparable Vacs that use the same technology.
Most Bed Bath and Beyonds have the Dyson on display.
Beware the minka-aire; after not so long use (not even heavy use), the gears develop a loud creaking sound and it has trouble oscillating.
Thanks Patrick. I need to see if a $300 fan is better then the $10 ones at Walmart.
The Dyson fan does have a fan -- it's just in the base rather than where the blades usually go. So I did not find it particularly quiet, which is my personal sticking point with fans...
The good: the breeze was gentle, but wide and encompassing and not "choppy"; plus it's a great conversation piece. The bad: the noise, the incredible price tag, and I also found it disappointingly cheap-looking in person. But that's just me. I got a Vornado and love it: it's strong and on three of the four settings it's virtually silent.
I have and love the Propello desk fan. It's super quiet and powerful enough without blowing everything everywhere. It's like having a constant breeze (but not a gust.)
I do cooking demonstrations and put it by the stovetop so I don't sweat to death!
I have a really great Lasko Box Fan sitting in my window. It does a great job pulling in the cool air at night, or circulating air in the apartment during the day, it cost all of $15 at the local supermarket, and it's made in the United States. We haven't seen our power bills go up, so it's nice to know we're staying comfortable without screwing up the environment.
how about a cool fan under 50 bucks? the link to the Lasko Box Fan doesn't work
You know, I've had this problem with AT comments before - especially when there's business products in a post, it's hard to embed links to the competition using HTML.
Anyway, try this: http://tinyurl.com/33rsfqz
The Laskco fans are nice and simple, they sit in the window and do what they're supposed to do (move air and keep you cool). And since they're not imported, they're greener, since the carbon impact of shipping is reduced (not mention that American environmental regulations are better than Chinese rules are!)
Usona's Large Wind Fan is also fantastic.

Y'all couldn't do a post with prices and where to get them like you do with some other things?
I love Vornado fans. I have an old Shop Fan http://www.vornadocentral.com/vornado-room-fans.php in the corner of my 885 sq ft, 11 ft ceiling loft and you can feel it. I get by with a mix of ceiling and Vornado fans on all but the hotest days.
Not the cheapest, not the most designy but they are well made and reasonable looking.
GQ had an amazing floor fan in one of the home design features a year or so ago. But, ironically, they didn't mention anything about the fan itself. But, they had it placed in an industrial loft which was very modern and trendy. The fan was metal and looked absolutely stunning. I even emailed them about it and got no response. I've been searching for a floor fan just like it ever since for my loft, but haven't been able to find one. It was similar to the Charley fan, but sleeker and a floor/pedestal version.
If anyone has options like this, please let me know!
I also like the Phi

The Dyson fan is immense. If I had that kind-of money I'd definitely buy it. It's like living in a wind tunnel. You really need to see it in real life.
I can't believe no one has mentioned the Vornado!
The Vornado is a beast. Spilled glaze all over it when painting; had to use a pliers to break free the speed switch.
And if dissing anything hurting the environment, log off, walk, ditch the cellphone, don't cook, wash, mow, paint or use makeup! Man.
