No matter how much square footage you were blessed with in the kitchen, it's bound to benefit from a little organizing TLC. Having an organized kitchen means everything from putting away the dishes to prepping for dinner is efficient and easy. We've rounded up our own 10 favorite organizing tools in the kitchen and don't forget to weigh in with your own after the jump.
Use lots of hooks--they can hold everything from your coffee mugs to purses to tea towels.
We just bought this island from IKEA and couldn't be happier. Extra counter space (when there was none before) plus spots for fresh fruit and cooking oils to live.
We've sung the praises of shelf risers and undershelf baskets before. Available at The Container Store or Target, they're your cabinets best friend for maximizing space.
In addition to our new kitchen island, we're thinking about adding another surface such as this drop leaf table top from IKEA. You can never have enough counter top space in the kitchen and we love the fact that this version can be put away when not in use.
A big fan of open shelving in the kitchen, you can use decorative baskets and bins to keep your stuff sorted. Or go with an all white or black color palate for your dishes for a more cohesive look.
Canisters (whether vintage or new) also work great for storing your kitchen supplies on open shelving.
In addition to your homes landing strip, consider incorporating a command center for important info that needs to be accessible to all family members.
We use our lazy susan on a pantry shelf which lets us easily reach items that would otherwise be hidden from view.
Large knives aren't safe rolling around in the cutlery drawer, so we choose to display them on a magnetic strip. This saves room in our small kitchen drawers and also allows for quick access when food prepping.

I'm a big fan of canisters and lazy susans. They are so multifunctional in every room. In the kitchen I like canisters for holding condiments (I save f/ restuarants), tea bags, sweet n low etc. And in other rooms they are good for hiding stuff. Lazy susans work for any place that you will forget about stuff that's hidden/stuffed behind other stuff- kitchen, bathroom, closet.
I LOVE my magnetic knife strip.
These are all good suggestions. We mounted three double coat hooks on a small wall next to the range and we're able to store 3 pans per hook.
I use mighty magnets on the base of the handles to suspend my Global knife from the exhaust hood. It's not unlike the magnetic strip, but less awkward to grab and pry loose imo. As well as being a real conversation starter.
You obviously do not have 2 year olds visiting your kitchen.
Nor 4, 6 or 8 legged visitors.
I do love slamming a kitchen drawer shut every now and then.
I used to have a knife block, but now that I've gone to a magnetic wall holder I'll never go back.
IKEA rocks for kitchen organizing. I have a couple of Grundtal rails next to my range to hold my most-often used pots, pans, and utensils; I had a free wall where I put a 15-inch deep Varde freestanding shelf unit http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/80158416 that holds my microwave and other small appliances while offering a butcher-block top for more prep surface; and I got a Besta unit http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/80134048 with doors added to make a pantry cabinet. Makes my small rental kitchen much more functional.
I bought 2 of those Norbro tables from IKEA to build a "part-time" counter under a window. You HAVE to mount them in the wall studs; don't rely on wall anchors, no matter how "strong" the anchor maker says they are, as they WILL pull right through the drywall. And not all of the holes for screws will line up with everyone's wall studs, so you might have to drill your own. Anyway, I wound up taking them down after 3 years, because they never got used, except as a dumping ground.
I love my magnetic knife strip (also from Ikea)! And I definitely need more of those shelf risers. Garden planters also make great containers for stuff. Also, I never thought of a lazy susan for my laptop, but it makes so much sense to the way I live, I'm totally going to go find one!
great job.
I like the idea of the hooks under the shelves. We have a kitchen with hardly any storage space, and we just bought some shelving. This should help get the most out of those shelves! Thanks for the inspiration!
My favorite is a pull-out base cabinet trash can. Keeps the unsightly out of sight. (Current version was part of the cabinet installation, but previously got a kit at Home Depot for an easy DIY.)
You can get undershelf baskets from Ikea too I think. I got mine in Sept 07, so hopefully they still sell them. They were .99 I think.
Overall these are all great ideas!
I LOVE my magnetic kitchen pantry cabinet.
