We New Yorkers feel lucky when we've got a sliver of balcony space, and we want to make the most of it — even if the area is only wide enough to accommodate a couple of window boxes. Here are 10 modern planters that attach to a balcony wall or fit over balustrades and railings.
- The Steckling Cube by Rephorm is a basic modern container designed to fit over a balustrade with a maximum diameter of 60 mm. Sold through European retailer Connox, it's €39.
- Made from recycled plastic water bottles, Wally Woolly Pockets, start at $39 and can be hung on a balcony railing or wall.
- Chicago store Jayson Home & Garden sells some beautiful, simple Wall and Balcony Troughs, starting at $40. For more money, you can buy them pre-planted.
- A prototype not yet in productino, Royer and Thirion's Modern Planter for Urban Balcony is a modular, contemporary design. The modules — made from sheet metal, rubber аnd plastic — hook over a balcony balustrade.
- Another prototype, the Modular Small-Space Balcony by Christian Lessing combines a vertical rack with adjustable seats, tables surfaces, and planters.
- Available through A Plus R in Los Angeles, the Greenbo Railing Balcony Planter ($28) is a simple, chic rail planter made from UV-protected, high-quality polypropylene.
- Hanging Boskke Sky Planters are distributed internationally — in the US you can find them through Sprout Home, Velocity Art and Design, and various museum stores.
- Sold through Anthropologie spinoff Terrain, the Harvest Garden ($268) is an attractive wall-mounted version of a vertical garden.
- Generate Design sells the arty Haisui Planter, $45. Created by Nobuhiro Sato, the wall-hung design resembles a miniature manhole.
- Online catalog company Gardener's Supply sells several basic railing planters for balconies — the 30-inch version shown above is priced at $35.

they take up a bit more room since they dont straddle the railing and hang on one side of it, but i picked up a bunch of these for next to nothing. They fit standard size pots/planters from big box stores which also only cost a few dollars. They stick out about 8 inches. I was able to line my whole balcony (which is large) with them and planters for less than $100. THey have held up really well so far had them for 2 seasons now.

WalMart has planters IDENTICAL to the last ones pictures for $9. They sit on the top of a fence or railing. MUCH less expensive than the option here....
Invariably, I want the prototype. So frustrating.
this is actually really cool: http://www.ahahomeandgarden.com/garden/how-to-make-a-hanging-gutter-garden/ - as a disclosure my company makes the cable and misc parts for this, but we don't actually SELL it as a product - its still DIY.
