Upright workstations have become a popular topic of late as the blogosphere discusses the ergonomic benefits of standing at your computer as opposed to sitting. We'll ignore that Donald Rumsfeld famously worked at his desk standing up and, instead, choose to remember that Ernest Hemingway wrote all his novels standing at his writing table. With that inspiration, we give you nine standing desks that may convince you to ditch the task chair and opt to stand tall.

Though these are beautiful desks you should take into account that none of them address the issue with the arm and hand position when you have to write. It's hard to get away with it when you just use a laptop but when you are using a desktop pc or mac, you really need a good low arm and hand position
I wish I had a standing desk at work! One of my co-workers has a desk where the corner piece in the middle goes up or down, depending on whether she needs to stand or sit, but she had to get serious doctors' recommendations to get it. Yet it makes so much sense. I HATE sitting at a desk all day. My back hates it. My hips hate it. My whole body hates it. If I could alternate sitting and standing like that, it would be so much better - if I could stand even sometimes, it would be so much better.
Anyway, my point was, before I tangentized, that the last thing I want to do is sit at a desk on my spare time. I keep my laptop on top of a dresser most of the time. A standing desk seems like a dandy idea!
If they mount a kitchen sink into the desk, I could eat and work at the same time.
I inherited a standing desk from my predecessor when I took a new job and I can tell you that while it may be good for your health, it also helps to have a chair to sit in from time to time. Standing for 8 hours kills your feet (in my experience). I also happened to have a small round table with two chairs for gatherings and I found myself taking sitting breaks because I simply could not stand for that long. I was in very good physical shape and not overweight.
Just something to consider if you are shopping for a table.
It amazes me how little attention is paid to ergonomics in offices. At my previous office, I propped up my screen on old phone books to get it to non-slouching eye level. If every office invested a few hundred when an employee starts to get them properly equipped, how many thousand might they save on chiropractic and other medical expenses later?
Oh, you are right about that, Ande. The job I am in now is the first place I've worked that even really considered ergonomics. When I started getting neck muscle spasms, they sent someone to re-set up my workstation with me, changed out my mouse and keyboard to my specs, and have just been terrific about it in general. (By the way, those mice with the thumb-operated roller-ball? YES. Best. Thing. Ever.)
Hey Guys,
I read the comment posting policy and genuinely thought this post could "add value" to the article. Not just to sell our own product ;-)
You might want to check into our adjustable height desk offerings at GeekDesk.com . You can raise/lower desks at the click of a button for a healthy mix of sitting OR standing!
Again I thought this could be helpful to you guys. Great article on the health benefits of standing while working. =)
I've been standing and refining my stand up or sit down desk for several years. My design places screen, keyboard and mouse in optimal positions. It's best to use separate keyboard. http://www.bodyfriendlyfurniture.com/ecodesk.html
This is a modular, knock down system that can be used as desk or storage. It uses vertical space well and saves 75% of the standard desk footprint.
