We've accidentally killed many plants with neglect or over-watering, but our air plants have been alive and kicking for three years. They're almost impossible to mess up: just give them a quick soak in a bowl of water once a week and leave them alone the rest of the time. They're also weirdly beautifully and, since they don't require soil, there are countless ways to display them.

Shaw's Original Fir...
Do these plants need a lot of light? I'd love to put one in my windowless bathroom.
I think some might do okay if there is some indirect light that gets into the bathroom. The "air plants" are epiphytes:

My favorite way to arrange them is kinda like photo 4: but adding in a few different kinds of bromeliads, and even some orchids (many are epiphytes).
makes me miss living in the cloud forest...
Where in NYC can i get these!!!????
So funny - I just came across Flora Grubb's (SF-based) Valentine's options with a wonderful selection of air plants and terrariums: http://floragrubb.com/shop/index.php. I would take one of these over a dozen roses ANY DAY.

The felt wall pockets are awesome and gave me an idea on how to use my old shoe organizer. I'm not the first to have this idea - there are even instructables out there on how to use a shoe organizer as a planter! I can't wait to try it.

Here's how I display my air plant. It's really similar to the frog one above, except I used a Mexican ceramic fish.
Ghostfish88: This summer I bought some air plants at the NY Botanical Garden in the Bronx
does anyone know where air plants can be purchased in the philadelphia area?
kahlil, I got mine at the Flower Show last year for about 4 bucks each!
The Flower show will be at the Convention Center in early March.
I would also like to put these in my windowless bathroom. I'm wondering if replacing our light bulbs with grow lights would work?? Does anyone know if grow lights would look weird in a bathroom? Someone recently suggested to me that we put grow lights in our windowless kitchen and my first reaction was, "We're not growing pot in the kitchen!" But then I thought, grow lights = simulated daylight... maybe a good idea after all...?
so far we have 3 air plants amidst our empire of plants ( we have a lot of plants! i love it!). One is hanging from a fishing string in our window, one is in a very tiny pot hung in the window, and one is in the remains of a barnacle cluster i got at a random store here in portland. we can't wait to add more to our collection! we love air plants :).
Jen8984 Thanks! I'll definately go get them!
I've got such a black thumb. Its really quite incredible. I've bought these on Pier 39 in SF and I've killed both. I've also killed several types of cactus. They'll be fine for a few months then its like they suddenly decide that they can't stand living with me. :(
@GhostFish88, you can also order them through eBay.

I saw them at Jayson Home & Garden yesterday. They're selling the small ones for $10 apiece! NUTS. The big ones were going for $35. Where I grew up, these things were literally falling out of the trees. It blows my mind that someone is going out and just scooping these little guys up off the ground and selling them for that kind of money.
That's my frog working it up there!
If anyone is wondering, you can get a variety of air plants at VERDE on S. 13th Street in Philadelphia, PA.
check out our work at seedtostem.org :)
You can purchase them online fairly cheap and easily. I just got some from Air Plant Design Studio.
