Name: Nathan
Location: Roger's Park, Chicago
Size & Type: 537 sq. ft. one bedroom
Favorite resource: "As an industrial designer, I spend a whole lot of time reading design blogs and magazines, so it all factors in... And IKEA is wonderful, selectively."
Pitch: "Starting with the clean slate of new construction, and being my first place living on my own, it's my first chance to work expressing my design philosophy from scratch."

Pitch Cont'd:"Like many others have also related, I enjoyed a mass jettisoning of stuff when I moved from a much larger apartment. So, all the finishes, colors, furniture, and accessories were chosen or modified specifically for this space to create bold, rich, and modern graphic vignettes, describing areas and creating purpose in a space, which, being largely rectangular and open, has very little natural flow on its own."

Your favorite element: "The exposed-brick 10ft-high wall in the living/dining area, washed with track lights."

Very masculine and clean. I like it, it all ties together well with your use of complimentary colors.
helipad. heeeheee. I like the place and your sense of style and humor.
Helipad, :) that's funny. Think you did a great job, really like your coffee table.
I love the use of darker shades - looks very rich and inviting.
this is an uber sexy space! it's very rich in color and wood tones, and that gray sofa is divine! can you share the source?
I like your furnishings, but would like to see more of the space itself. Why no shot of your favorite element?
I'm coveting your kitchen cabinets. Do they open upwards, or side to side? Where did the handles come from? This is a dreamy apartment.
Is that a Gus Design couch? Love it!
is it just me or does the dining table and chairs seem to float?
What kind of alarm clock/device is that on the nightstand?
The chairs are floating... If you look carefully you will notice that they are hanging off the table via the backrest...
Neato...
I believe the cabinets to be ikea...
Sexy.
This space screams for one of those wall-mounted gel-burning ventless fireplaces.
Also love the stiped pillow/case on the bed.
But agreed, a little hard to get a sense of the space past that first pic. But three pics is a HUGE challenge.
So sleek, so masculine, so sexy! Nice choices, good job!
Very slick & gallery-like.
Very very nice. Me like it a lot. GREAT job.
Sexy and beautiful!
Very cool, but that whole exposed brick wall thing that Chicago was/is so hung up on is the only thing I don't like. This is almost the exact same floorplan I had on Elaine Place.
This home oughta be a winner.
LOVE this! Love the kitchen!
One question: Where did you get the sectional? I love it!!
Thanks for the kind words everyone - I'm flattered and a little surprised that 'sexy' keeps coming up... things go well and I'll throw a party. (ha ha.) Answers for all: the sectional is indeed Gus Modern, and from the excellent ID Chicago on Halsted Street. The cabinets open upwards; they were custom-sourced for the building by the contractor from an independent fabricator in Bulgaria(!). The alarm clock is a Target number from the late-nineties Michael Graves line. And yes, I'd relish the opportunity to post more pictures. Cheers.
it's definitely cool & nice & modern, but for me it lacks personality.
I see a globe snuck in there, but that's the only thing that lets me know this is an apartment where someone lives & isn't a boutiquey hotel.
I guess I like more kick in my entries. Show me a space that is both cool & functional & make me want to get to know the person behind the space.
I feel bad now saying that, b/c it really IS a nice place. Maybe I don't understand the rules.
Having a hard time articulating--the vibe I get from the space is sort of a low buzzing & I prefer something make me hear a symphony. For the smallest, coolest contest anyway!
ehn I stop trying.
Hmm... It is sexy and slick, and looks very expensive. I'm just not sure I get that sense of surprise and wonder that some of the best have conveyed.
I guess it's just hard to tell from these photos how creative the owner of this one is. It's beautiful though, congratulations!
Great space. I'd love to see other photos to see the rest of the space (as would everyone else!). I recognize the bed as the Malm bed from Ikea - I have the same one...but you seem to have dressed up the headboard...did you do an upholstered attachment for the front or is that paint?
k*
I LOVE the rugs! Where did you find them? I love my carpet free floors, but sometimes it's a bit cold in the morning!
wow, this place is masculine...and expensive looking. :)
i love that couch. where's it from?

Bravo!
Rich, deep, tones and wood accents create a vey warm atmosphere.
Not necessarily my taste, but I believe that your vision is realized here.
My Vote: Stellar! Insta-finalist!

Jenny (Usagi),
the rugs are both from Ikea- the Flokati is $70 and the large sheepskins are $40. i know, cause i just bought some! but sadly, the Flokati was too small...
Ah, the ever wise Hed Kandi, who said "Two men, one bed, not my thang" on another thread, in case anyone missed that gem of wisdom.
Are you sure that 'two men' comment was meant seriously? I didn't think so, and I can't get over the name....
Nathan needs to marry me.
I could so live in this place....but where to put my three dogs?
Hope Nathan isn't allergic!
Very stylish but I'd like to see more of your storage solutions.
Nice and super clean. But I agree with leahm; place needs more personality. Also more color.
Right now the only msg I get from the apt. about the resident is that he is a super organized and orderly person. That may be exactly the msg Nathan wants to convey, and that's fine. Just wondering if that same msg could be conveyed while still including more personal touches in the apt.
did you on purposely mix the brown malm bed frame with the white bed side tables or did you happen to grab the wrong box at ikea, because i just about did the same thing. Nice space!!!! it appears to be a bit larger than the said 537.5 s.f. according to the floor plan. The space is very well utilized.
Allow me to explain the bed - the Malm frame is a previous generation piece; that is, the combination of wood rails and white laminate headboard isn't available anymore. The companion nightstand is recent, so it's all white. The headboard detail is painted - it's a color on the same swatch as the wall paint, just 3 shades darker.
A bit dark and uninviting. The kitchen is nice though.
I like the mixture of Target and Ikea with custom cabinets and designer sofa. Very nice.
I don't think the place completely lacks personality, but I like more color and more decoration so I voted "Cool." I might feel a little awkward about visiting there--I wouldn't want to touch or move anything.
Manly. Very manly!
Good job. I don't consider this space to be uninviting, but I'm pretty orderly myself.
I almost feel like I've visited this stylish space! Oh right, I have! The place is very inviting and comfortable while maintaining an edgy feel. I second, or third the "sexy" comments above.
P.S. I can't believe someone proposed marriage in a comment just from viewing your space! Wowza... I think that alone means your place is the winner.
Sadly I am already married. Well not sadly, but you understand.
I proposed cuz I love the muted tones, the masculine yet stylin' flare and the rugs just scream out to have unnatural acts performed upon them. Of course if they aren't faux then the wedding is off - - - and I won't return the ring! ;-)
I love the place. What model are the dining chairs? They look quite similar to the Coco Chair at DWR but they only have them available in red (as far as I know)
Very masculine. Very cool. What is the sofa?
WOW! LOVE the softness of the rugs. Get some chunky candles and green plants, sexxxxyyyyy.
Nathan I hope you are going tomorrow night so I can shake your hand.
i love the pumpkin paint color in the kitchen. what color/brand is that? (i realize it may be too late to get an answer.) but i will check back just in case.
