Location: Montclair, NJ
Type: 3 bedroom colonial house built in 1920-owned
Why I use color:
color is very mysterious. it can change your mood and affect you
psychologically. it can make a space seem larger and more grand. or it can make the same space feel smaller and intimate depending on the choice...
i get bored easily and love to change the colors in my house.this is done simply by repainting and or changing objects around. i am a painter and i think of my living space the same way i think about painting. So it is not just color but how colors relate to each other. also depth of field and value--how light or dark a color is. i use color as a way to move a viewer's eye through the space. and to give depth to a view.
my house is fairly open so you can see several rooms at once so all
of the color decisions have to work together. i like to have a focal
point or pay-off as you look through the rooms.
2 Good color tips:
1-though paint is a fairly cheap and easy way to get color in your
house it is also good to choose rugs, lamps, art, plants and flowers
etc help to create harmony and contrast.
2-experiment--nothing is permanent.---even that lime green you
thought would be perfect for the front door can be easily changed.
Favorite type and brand of paint:
i like ralph lauren lately--the suede finishes-- they are very matte and absorb the light. i also keep acrylic artists paints on hand and custom mix if the color is not quite right when i get them home
