Q: I just bought an alcove studio in the West Village and I am trying to find a queen-sized bed with a headboard (probably upholstered in a warm/neutral tan/beige color, maybe with some minimal decor or maybe a rattan/bamboo or leather) and a base that has storage in it.
The Door Store had a great one but was in a dark leather — too heavy and masculine for my apartment. West Elm has some nice knock-offs of headboards but not with any storage underneath. Also loved one I saw from Donghia but very expensive. I have seen one made by Knossos furniture, which is reviewed pretty negatively on your site, but it was just wood and didn't have a headboard and the wood was exposed so wouldn't match a different headboard.
The alcove is pretty small so every inch counts. I'm thinking maybe of mounting a headboard on the wall above the mattress to save a few inches. Finding a headboard seems easier. Finding a bed/base with storage to match it seems harder. Any advice is much appreciated!

I like this one: http://www.copelandfurniture.com/collection.php?id=60
I had this west elm bed, but I hated it. I have an intense need to rearrange furniture, and this is very heavy. I think it could be a good idea if there is only one place where the bed could go... it is impossible to move around!
I know it's ikea, but their brimnes series has a bed frame drawers and a headboard with shelves

I have this set, and while it looks childlike in the photos, it looks great in person. The drawers are also quite large and I get so much storage from them.
I modified an old waterbed base for myself.
World Market has an attractive storage bed (dk wood) on their website right now.

This looks amazing! What is that gray color paint for the accent wall and the other wall??
Why not just put a regular metal queen-size bed frame atop those plastic bed risers (or some people have just used plain old bricks), find a bedskirt long and flowing, and use plastic bins for your storage needs? Then you can focus on finding the perfect headboard--it'll probably be a lot easier finding that than finding the perfect headboard/storage combo.
(This is also a good idea if you're faced with buying to fit the space, rather than buying something you really love--is this solution something you'd want to have in your next place, or the place after that? Usually the bed isn't something you update frequently.)
I love the gray wall color...what color/manufacturer is it? Also, who makes the comforter? I second what pammyfay said. That is exactly what I'm planning to do in my studio.

I have this bed, many of their beds can be ordered with under-bed storage, the platform that the mattress sits on lifts up so you can store things underneath. Not the best if you need to get to your stuff every day but great for out of season wardrobe, etc.
Flou offers a high-end storage bed with upholstered headboard, and the Design Within Reach Matera bed has storage, but with a wood headboard. Both rather pricey.
This is the best:

AT friends:
A photo of a painted wall is never a good representation of the actual paint color. Further, paint colors look different on every wall in every home due to the natural light, lamp light, size of room, existing furnishings, etc, etc, etc.
Not cheap, but pretty.

This is a tall bed but has 2 dressers -- one on either side.
My fiance and I bought it when we moved into our place in June and it works so well. I will say that I need a step to get into the bed easily (I am 5' 3", he is 6'2") but it's still worth it.

Oysterbed in San Francisco has wonderful storage beds. You can even customize them. We have one and have been very happy with it.

If you select the WestElm pivot storage bedframe, any of their upholstered headboards will fit:

Otherwise, why not find a storage bed base that works for you and have a custom upholstered headboard made for it in whatever style & fabric you'd prefer?
Bo Concept has somehttp://www.boconcept.us/Beds.aspx?ID=84274&imageid=2413. Nice but not cheap.
we bought a wonderful chocolate brown one from the DoorStore http://www.doorstorefurniture.com/bedroom/beds/best-sellers/bolero-leather-storage-bed.html we love it!
we have the one from cost plus -- its my most stylish piece for sure, but it works well for what it is (lots of storage). I didn't want to pay a lot for a storage bed - this isn't my dream bed, but neither is a bedroom without enough space for storage!
i would choose this over the west elm though, for the price, neither one is solid wood..

Also - does anybody else have the Chase Bed (Cost Plus) and use a different headboard? I need a headboard, but the one they sell isn't doing it for me.. thanks for any advice!
For price it's hard to beat Ikea's Malm bed with the matching nightstands. Ikea has several kinds of under bed storage drawers that work with it.
I have the Ikea Mandal bed frame. I sanded it down and stained it a darker color and painted the drawers to look like wood. It's sturdy, doesn't creak and has made it through two moves and still looks great. http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/30176309
I have often wondered why more people don't think of the headboard as a storage opportunity rather than just the bed base.
When I was looking to add storage space to my apartment, one of the concepts I considered was a storage headboard made from tall Ikea kitchen cabinets.
Here is a rendering of that idea:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/28955208@N05/5270921710/
Ultimately, I decided to go with a curtain wall storage idea because it would better accommodate the larger boxes I had in a storage facility. But if you are considering under bed storage as a sufficient solution, this headboard storage concept might give you an even wider range of storage possibilities in a small space.
Talking of Malm..

I'm drooling over that gorgeous comforter! Where can I find one like it?
Any first hand reviews of the World Market bed? How's the quality? How much of it is wood versus MDF/fiberboard?
I have a flou bed (the notturno). It's pricey (my first bit of high end furniture), but really well built and gorgeous… Lots of options in terms of fabric and flou has a lot of beds with storage. The Notturno's nice because it's barely any bigger than a queen size mattress.
