What inspired you?
We converted a 6’x6’ walk-in closet into Owen’s nursery, so our inspiration was the size limitation. It was actually liberating, only considering pieces that would work in such a small space since there were fewer viable choices.

The crib—a Stokke Sleepi—is the only thing we bought new because it’s slightly smaller than a standard crib. The bookcase, salvaged from a shuttered Connecticut schoolhouse, is only 7.5” inches deep. We found the dresser/changing table on the street, and it’s more compact than anything we saw in stores. Likewise the hutch—a Craigslist find—maximizes the space in the corner of Owen’s room.

Great Tip:
Vertical storage! We tore out some of the shelves in the closet in order to make way for the nursery furniture, but kept the ones that were 6’ or higher. We also kept one small section of the closet intact—behind a thick velvet curtain—so we could keep a hanging rod for clothes and storage for toys and such.

What are the colourful wooden beads hanging beside the changing table? May I ask where you got them?
Just LOVE this place!
I love it! Love the wall decorations and the mobile.
This is the second time today I have seen that giraffe. Where can I get one?
6 by 6!?! Wow. You did a great job with very limited space. I love the whales.
Enchanting! I wish I could sleep in that cozy, beautiful room. Brilliant use of space too! Love it, Rosemary
Truly wonderful! You are obviously very talented!!
That's such a lucky kid to have the beautiful room....Noreen
Funny headline--great to have parents with a sense of humor AND style. I like how you built "thin" and "up," and used pops of interactive color.
Impressive and inspiring! I have a much bigger space to work with, but my husband needs to use about half of it for storage. I was pouting over that, but now I see that small can = beautiful and functional.
Even if the room were larger this would be terrific design. That you were able to accomplish it in a closet is amaing.
Well done!
What a beautiful space! It looks so cozy and warm, how perfect for a baby. You did an amazing job!
color chart is a nice touch.
The best things come from simple things...This room is the definition of that. Once a place that held shoes and other closet mish mash, to a place that should be mentioned in a handbook for nursery design.
It has real character... Something you can't find in a store.
Design within reach, LITERALLY! This is one lucky lil dipper. but where do you keep the drool bucket?
seriously, great job parents!
Looking at the photos brings instant happiness!
That is one sweet nursery. Sweet, small and swell.

Amazing! I wonder what they would do with my bird's cage?
Necessity is the mother (and father) of invention.
What a lucky feller little Owen is to have such a creative and colorful crib!
I am impressed with what you could do with such a small space. Nice accents esp the giraffe and colorful educational cards hanging up top. Great way to keep it light and fun.
i love the juxtaposition of the large mammals (whales & giraffe) in such a tiny nursery. winner for smallest and best. i award you 1st and 2nd.
I mean you have a japanese print in the room, how can you top that? I wish it was my childhood room.
What a cozy and colorful room:)
great kozyndan print! i have the same one in my own bedroom! cute space!
Owen is a cool as his room.
This room is smaller than my bed!!
This room makes me want to have babies!!!
that little room makes me very happy...and i'm 32! good job with the wonderful colors and shapes!
What a cute room! I love the colors... Kudos to you!
Whales AND giraffes?? He's going to be an explorer, FOR SURE.
Owen is already a true New Yorker. With that beautiful room to start with, he'll be in a two bedroom by the time he's 3.
(I'm still in a studio...) Great cheerful colorful space.
Cheers, Owen!
Very creative and cheery! Jennifer
owen must have the sweetest parents and the sweetest dreams. i love it!
thanks everyone for your comments! the rainbow teether/grasping toy in the first pic is called the ringelrangel hanging bead toy. i think it's from germany, but you can get it online at www.thewoodenwagon.com. and we got the wallpaper giraffe silhouette at romp in brooklyn (www.rompbklyn.com).
Hey, parents,
Great job, the little guy is so luck to have ingenious parents! Love the books and giraffe.
i could rest in peace here even without a drool bucket.
This is really nice. I would like the room for myself.
What a cute, colorful nursery. What imaginative parents, Owen is one lucky baby!
This is one of the cutest and most ingenious uses of a small
space I have ever seen. Very creative and stimulating for
Owen. Good job, everyone.
Who needs professional interior designers when Owen has creative parents like that.
ok, perfectly cute, but overall, it does not evoke a huge feeling. definitely needs color on the walls.

Owen's Grandpa
Sorry, Piper. That's just Owen's grandpa's way of saying the nursery "evokes a huge feeling" for him. Thanks to everyone else who had such lovely things to say!
Wow, I love it. So freaking cute.
FYI -- Urban Outfitters has a wallpaper deer on clearance right now. Not quite as cute as the giraffe, but a good substitute at about half the price.
owen's grandpa-
not sure why you felt the need to make such a caustic retort to my posting. i was just giving my honest feedback and it was not meant to be mean-spirited.

Piper Pie,
Owen's grandpa says he was just joking (though I can see how that might not be evident in his post) and I already apologized to you on his behalf. But again, I'm sorry he said that.
Looking at your profile, I'm guessing that you are a friend or family member of #12 - Judy and John's Flight of Fancy. I'm sure you can therefore understand our enthusiasm (and sensitivity!) in being a part of this contest and exposing our baby's private space to the Apartment Therapy community.
This kind of negativity (yours and his) is not really in the spirit of this sweet contest and so I hope we can all move on. Best of luck to Judy and John and all the other wonderful entries!
Thanks,
Nell
Nell can bite me.
Just joking ofcourse.
