1.7 Ocean Event followup: Part 3

So Cali Cool. The last two designers featured in the showcase bungalows at the 1.7 Ocean event last weekend were designers Andrew Virtue of Andrew Virtue Design, and Steve Jones, co-founder of Better Shelter. Both designers paid homage to the classic "surf shack" but with updated style and clean modern lines. See below for some "surf shack Chic" inspiration...

Andrew used green tones throughout his bungalow, most notably, a soothing seafoam color. He utilized these gorgeous shell curtains to divide the living room area, created by Laguna Beach artist and stylist, Jim Olarte. Andrew staged the rooms with fun surf/skate touches, as well as stretching the design outside and adding interesting ideas into the large yard.

Steve Jones' bungalow also had a strong surf vibe, and included a fantastic idea to hack an Ikea Docksta table. He switched out the top and replaced it with a wooden one, then added mosaic tiles on top to giving it a mid century beachy makeover.

Both of these are beautiful, and both like greens and blues as much as I do (hence, great taste!). Steve's mosaic tabletop is spectacular--but Steve, did you need to use cement board or wedi board?

I LOVE the blue in the first picture of Steve's place -- its exactly what i've been looking for but couldn't find (nothing is bright enough, they're all too flat). Does anyone know what this color is???

Hi XT, I found the couch at Mortise & Tenon in Los Angeles on La Brea Ave (http://mortisetenon.com/). I think I paid about $2,700, which I thought was very fair. Brand new, not vintage. It was one of those things where I just walked into the store, not really looking for anything, saw the couch and just HAD to have it. I hate it when that happens! :) The scale is such that you can really stretch out on it and use it as a daybed too. I am also such a sucker for upholstery tacks.
Everyone at Mortise & Tenon are all very nice as well.

Hi Krister, I picked up round glass tile table at Rose Bowl flea market, it came with an awful base. I bought the Ikea table that comes with the great simple saarinen knockoff base. I stashed the Ikea table top (you never know) and attached the base to my round glass table. And I have to say, I pinched the idea from Andrew Virtue. Thanks Andrew! A great way to re-invent thrift store/flea market finds. S

Hi Steven, glad to hear that. I was just concerned that adhering vitreous tile to the edge would leave it vulnerable to damage---but you've got it figured out. Very cool place.

Hi Austin and Crocovert - the green I used is a custom color I had mixed at Coastal Paint in Long Beach ( I love supporting my local mom and pop paint store ). I never seem to be able to find the exact shade I want on a paint chart. The pink in the bedroom photo is an optical illusion - the walls are actually white. Don't know why it registered as blush colored ( maybe my poor photography skills and old camera !).

The chairs are made by a company called VIRCO - believe it or not, this is high end classroom furniture, which is why you've never seen it retail. These are from their ZUMA line, this model is the ZCANT ( for its cantilevered legs ) in the 18" seat height . It's also available as a very cool rocking chair ! The color I used is Apple , but it comes in an amazing pallette of over 20 colors, including coral, fuchsia, lavender, all the way to chocolate and basic black.
