Why I use color:Concrete floors, dark brick walls, 5 tiny windows--COLOR was the only solution to bringing life to my dungeon of an apartment. In conjunction with the original dreary theme, I began using browns & oranges to decorate, and shortly after I painted the white pattern on the walls to correlate with all my white furniture. Gradually, I added blues, greens, yellows, reds (all the colors of the spectrum), inspired by a colorful pillow I bought after moving in. Living in this space now is like living right in one of my illustrations. It's fun, energetic, alive, and full of personal touches. For me, color makes my world go 'round.
2 good color tips:
1. If you're unsure of a theme, find an interesting pillow or painting to start. From there you can grab colors, patterns & shapes to formulate the rest of the space.
2. Always have AT LEAST three colors in your theme. One main color, one variation of the main color, and a striking complement here & there.
2 good color resources:
1. You can look in a magazine & copy a room any day. But how about instead turning the page to a photo of a girl with a bright outfit on surrounded by a funky setting? Or perhaps a photo of a luminous vase filled with flowers or fruit? There are lots of great colors to be grabbed from unexpected places.
2. Purchase a painting, a piece of artwork that really speaks to you both color & form-wise, and steal the crap out of it!
