It's a bit of deja vu for those of us who went through water rationing when we were kids growing up in California. While EMBUD (East Bay Municipal Utility District) is the first Bay Area agency to mandate a reduction of water usage, you can bet it won't be the last. Saturday's Chronicle featured water rationing as its lead story.

In Australia nearly all the major cities have some form of water restrictions and it is not going away anytime soon. There is just not enough rainfall to fill the water catchments. There is now a lot of interest in garden and house design to save water. Welcome to the future!
