2 Creative (and Inexpensive) Home Decor Ideas

Corina's DIY home decor ideas definitely make us say, "Hey, why didn't we think of doing that?!" We're always on the lookout for creative (and inexpensive) lighting solutions and Corina's awesome ideas are right up our alley...

Corina takes 2 IKEA lampshades and turns them upside down to hang as pendant lighting in the living room. Modern and chic--all at an affordable price, this idea would work great in any room. Next, a pop of color is added over the couch with DIY art. A homemade frame is covered with stretched fabric bought at the thrift store. The piece not only adds texture, it gives the room a great focal point.

The IKEA lamps I'm partial too, but the rest looks cheap and tacky - especially the covering on the sofa. How did this post get on AT?

I like the stretched fabric idea but maybe a larger or bolder print would work better as 'artwork' instead of looking like wrapping paper

Agreed... the towel is a bit tacky. And the ikea lamp shades? That really isn't news as they have them displayed at the store like that. The fabric covered frame is nice and easy way to add some color, although the print doesn't do it for me as well, but it is hung too high in my opinion.

The lampshades look good, and so do the three stacked pillows. Might even want to add some more and larger pillows.

The fabric-wrapped board is something I am interested in, but you have to find the right fabric and you probably won't find it at a thrift store. It has to be something really worth looking at and I would definitely avoid doing a pillow in the same fabric. Also it looks like the board is positioned too high up on the wall.

I wrapped a couple of boards with a bold print fabric (an old table cloth in fact!) and get tons of compliments on it. I'd do it again if I found the right print. Free art since I already had the canvas and the tablecloth.

I think if you stenciled/screenprinted a large image on the artwork, it would look less wrapping paper-like.

That fabric looks like it's one of those Magic Eye posters! These are some good ideas, but could have used a better example.

I like the ideas, but the photo is just... why? Why not remove that towel before taking the photo? This doesnt give any inspirational feeling at all.

I like the fabric she's chosen to mount, I think it's a great way to give a large hit of such a strong colour without being overpowering. (And I think a larger print would just look like a wallpaper sample).

I see she's also used the same fabric to cover one of the throw cushions, but another thrifty thing she's done, if I'm not mistaken, is cover another of them with the same blue fabric but reversed (the striped cushion). Very clever.

Also love the upside-down lampshades, so simple but effective.

Apart from the towel on the sofa (please get rid of it!) I think this is very thoughtfully balanced space and looks great.

I like the tension that is created in the room by the highly hung art/ small pillows/dark and light couch...it breaks away from the usual mold of your typical page in a CB2 catalog. And I'm guessing that is not a towel, but a large throw with a terry cloth-like texture? The brightness of it doesn't bother me, maybe keep your eyes peeled for an alternative, unless you like it as is! It's your house, and I think it's nice!

Not only is SaraBa's idea on a higher level of taste, she used first person singular.

I am quite surprised that this photo is posted as a source of inspiration... I get that those ideas are good and thrifty, but the execution here... well... let's just say that they're completely not my taste...

Thanks for the compliments. And MidoriMonsta - yes, the chairs are from Ikea. And so is the table. I'd like to get something a little more sturdy and well made someday, but my kids are still little and this is the table they eat at every morning, and paint, and do homework... so inexpensive is working for us at this stage in our family's life!
