Name: Jason M.
Location: Santa Monica, CA
Size & Type: 420 sq. ft. studio converted to 1 bedroom (barely)
Favorite resource:
I am nothing without Craigslist, but I love that place on Colorado, called Hastings Plastics. I made my own lucite table for only 80 bucks and was able to make homemade sliding doors out of plastic to create a bedroom out of the old dining room thanks to that place.
Pitch:
I recently moved from a 120 square foot apartment to this 420 square foot apartment in the same building so I feel like I'm living in the world's largest small apartment!

Pitch Cont'd:
It may not be huge, but part of living small is that usually you trade space for location, which in my case is blocks from the beach, the local coffee shop, and many of my friends. You make the larger community your "other rooms," and I really enjoy that. Plus, you buy so much less junk.
Your favorite element:
You can't see it in the pics but I have this awesome card catalog that is great for holding all that crap that you need but never use.

LOVE THIS! Your living room is beautiful!
You wet sanded and polished your table's raw edges? I can't tell from the picture. I made some lucite wares in shop class in grade school and high school, but I don't exactly know where to get the materials!
I like! Great job.
Love your space! Is that a red birdcage or a plant stand in the first picture?
*waves* Hi Santa Monica neighbor! You are so right about trading the interior square footage for your neighborhood. Its so worth it.
I love your living room. Nice job.
Your living room is totally slick, I like. Impressed by the DIY plastic - would love to see a pic of the sliding doors. Really like the wall o' frames in the bathroom, wish I could see what's in them. Continue to be dismayed by the gnome trend... oh well.
Your place has warmth and character -- well done!
I thought I was the only one into kitschy cowboy prints! Nice bedsheets.
Really beautiful. I love your use of art in the bathroom.
haha cowboy sheets! totally adorable!
i like this b/c it's simple but has lots of personality. you can tell therre is a sense of humor.
How does that close-up of your bed help win a smallest-coolest contest?
The living room is great; I wish we weren't hemmed in by the "three photos only" rule. Are those cowboy (Roy Rogers?) sheets vintage? If not, the source, please.
The sheets look like similar to some Target kids flannel that I saw this winter
I think this is my favorite entry so far. It's good to know I'm not the only wierdo with gnomes in my apartment. It has a lot of personality and character, but is well planned and edited as well.
I really like the living room. Alas, I really don't get too much from the other two photos, wish they gave more information.
I like the living room, especially the credenza or sideboard. I like the idea of all those frames on the wall. Photo of your bedroom conveys nothing particularly interesting about the room itself. (Outside of bedsheets and gnomes, but still... not meeting my visceral requirements for cool apartment.) Has potential.
Living room = pretty good!
Bedroom = nasty
I don't know a single girl (or guy) that would crawl into that sheet set and be ready to ride the cowboy who sleeps there.
Bathroom = nasty
You brought all the picture frames home from the flea market! .05 each or whole box for $1
The living room is very nice. Oh, that chair!
I love the art in the bathroom and am impressed with your space planning.
I would, however, prefer to see 3 photos that represented a better connection of the apartment. Its difficult to get a feel of the overall look with what is shown (maybe we really need 4 or 5 photos for these contests).
I'd love to see the sliding doors. Much luck. Thanks for sharing this.
Hi, thanks. The table was cut and so it didn't really have any rough edges... they have a special bonding adhesive that works great too.
-The sheets are Target .
-Sorry about the bedroom pic... because the space is only a foot larger than a queen bed... there wasn't really any angle to get more in the pic! (one of the hassles of the smal size!)
If i get a chance to take more this weekend, I'll try and see if I can find an angle that shows the sliding doors and the bed.
- the bird cage I got for 2 dollars (seriously) on clearance at Ross and then i spray painted it orange and then lacquered it.
-and yes... 3 pics is so impossible!
Wow...I would actually really want to pictures of your 100 sq ft apartment!
You had me at card catalog. Actually you had me before that. I really like the art wall in the bathroom, the credenza, and the cowboy sheets! I hope we get to see more pics.
Love the living room.
Oh, and while I'm not the biggest fan of cowboy sheets, I don't think it's going to repel the ladies/gentlemen (unless they're super shallow).
you totally had me until the cowboy bedsheets! but to each his own, and i love everything else. the DIY bright birdcage idea is SO cool. i hate birds but love birdcages.
To quote LuxuryLA:
"Bathroom = nasty

um...i think thats pretty much what at least half of the AT audience does, right? arent we here because of our undying love for flea market scores and thriftstore finds that we make look like a million bucks in our teeny apartments?
i love the living room, the bathroom, and the layout. and like everyone else, would enjoy some additional photos before i vote. looks great so far!
Wow, you manage to put a kitchen table and bed in your kitchen! Not a fan of the bed, but I love your lucite table. Is there really anything that you "need" but never use?
i think better pictures need to be posted.
The pitch is adorable, and you made your own table . . . so I forgive you for liking gnomes as decor.
Really great job! And I love the bathroom as well as the living room, where the furniture = three perfect pieces. I hope you get a big prize to go spend on some stuff for your bedroom - love the cowboy whimsey, but want to give the comforter to a dog shelter. ;)
it's hard to know for sure from the three pictures, but i think i really like this! the living room is lovely. the cowboy sheets and masses of pictures in the bathroom have personality. and i for one like the gnome!
i think the bedroom is my favorite part of your apartment. it's funny and kitschy without trying too hard. love the faux wood log pillow!

Uhm, what is wrong with that?!
I think the living room is great and I like the seeing different frames on the wall--whether you paid $.05 or $50! Cowboy sheets do have kitsch but maybe the presentation of the bedroom pic could have been better. Three pics is way too difficult to get a feel of ANY of these places. Thanks for sharing Jason!
All I want is for you to take me with you to get the box of frames for $1.00. I love the look of them in the bathroom; a good place to have a gallery of small works. The lr is inviting and warm. And I think the gnome and the sheets give a 50s vibe.
Jason,
I love the DIY lucite. How did you make that table? I'm dying to see the sliding doors too. I want a full tutorial!
I hate to break it to you, but the bed is a dealbreaker. You should probable read this NY Times article before it's too late:
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/03/29/garden/29breakers.html?em&ex=1176436800&en=79e68803968305aa&ei=5087%0A
Props for the chair and table. Other than that, nothing screams Cool at me -- it looks similar to 1000's of other apartments out there
The photos aren't telling the story here, so I'm not sure either way.
Can we get a picture of the home made sliding doors that separate the kitchen from the bedroom? They sound fab!
LOVE the red birdcage....this place looks great...would have loved to have seen the homemade door divider solution though...
and can i just say....WTF at a 120 sq ft apt! that actually exists!? how can a bed even fit in there?
Incredibly fine living room, resourceful and creative solutions--and what a great bedroom. If you don't want cowboy sheets or bedside gnomes, that's fine---but if you want to personalize your space (personally, I respect those with gnome fantasies), then isn't the bedroom the place for it? Gotta have humor. Nice job, Jason.
It's nice to see that a place like Hastings Plastics is your resource of choice--it shows how creatively resourceful you are. And I love the unique, personal touches--the antique fan, the bird cage, the cowboy sheets.
Amazing!
The photos don't convey the use of space tho. But I like what I see nonetheless.
And such a cute guy in the floor plan :)
i like, but i'm feeling like maybe the pics don't do it justice or show enough detail ....? that said, i know that small spaces are tough to photograph.
The first photo really appeals.
I like my cowboys to have a sense of humour, so the sheets totally do it for me. Love the space.
Jason, can your apartment and my apartment be friends?
Well done! This space shows a lot of spirit. I love it.
I love the living room. The bathroom is not my style - I can see the cool factor with the pictures, but it doesn't say "clean".
The bedroom totally lost me. That is the one room that you can't outsource to your community.
Jason, I love the console. Is that where your tv is? I like the whole apartment. The only thing that stood out as not going was the bird cage thing. Its funny how close everyone is looking at these pictures. I had to go look again to see the cowboy sheets and the log pillow...like em.
I like your style,Great bits.
This is a really cool place. I could live here. I feel like the bedroom shot leaves something to be desired. Perhaps it is just not showing enough. The other spaces that are showed seem so complete. I especially like the living room. There is a perfect amount of stuff in there to make it feel well designed yet still interesting and liveable.
