Just a few ideas on how to do it:
• Unify a group of photos using frames of the same color and material.
• Group similar shaped vessels together and then throw in one different shape.
• Organize a theme around a piece of art.
• Let color alone unify different objects.
• Use nature- the kids will enjoy this one as well.

i like this idea! i did something like this a while ago, when (in an effort to be less addicted to "treasure hunting" at thrift stores) i tried to find and display my personal treasures. with a toddler and a preschooler in the house, i made use of high places as suggested.
on the other hand, i've taken some chances with a couple accessible displays, and it didn't take long for the kids to learn not to touch. obviously i wouldn't do that with something precious and delicate, but in the case of the "home cure" fresh flowers on the table and things made of wood or stone, it was worth it for a lesson in not touching (or touching with one finger only) and now my home is that much prettier. and the nature display, of course, should be touched and loved by tiny hands!
