080107InUmbra.jpgEach year, the IDSA (Industrial Designers Society of America) juries the International Design Excellence Awards, lovingly referred to as IDEA. This year, in the furniture category, the winners include:

InUmbra, shown above, by Dirk Wynants (Belgium): "An outdoor umbrella that creates an atmosphere of tranquility. The pulleys and ropes are all suspended out of view above the umbrella leaving the underside free of distractions."

080107KEY_bicycle_rack.jpgKEY bicycle rack by Lagranja Design (Spain) and Santa & Cole (Spain): "KEY offers urban cyclists a safe place to secure their bike. Polyurethane foam, a low-cost material not commonly found in urban areas, coats the exterior and can be colored, breaking away from the coldness that usually characterizes urban furniture."

080107Kohler_Steward_Waterless_Urinal.jpgKohler® Steward™ Waterless Urinal by Kohler Co.: "...incorporates water-saving features without sacrificing performance, is virtually splashless, inhibits odors and is easy to keep clean. Its soft elliptical shape provides a fresh, sleek look not found in traditional urinals. Kohler developed a liquid trap, using a sealing liquid that is less dense than liquid waste, to block odors."
