One of my favorite parts of the holidays is snuggling up with a mug of cocoa or mulled wine and poring over all of the carefully-curated gift guides. Some are pretty, some are practical, some are outrageous — and I love them all. I've never given or requested a gift guide item, but the fun is in the gawking. So without further ado, here's a guide to some of my favorite gift guides.
Most Helpful: Fug Nation's Holiday Gift Guide
Every year, Heather and Jessica of Go Fug Yourself compile an incredibly fun, witty, creative, and well-rounded gift guide — but the truly amazing thing is the range of prices. Almost everything on their list is between $10-$40, and they're all items that feel like real gifts, not $40 trinkets to tie onto the package of a "real" gift. I feel like there's an item on this list for every single one of my friends.
Most Timeless/Rugged: Art Of Manliness Holiday Gift Guide 2013
A classic thermos, a shoeshine kit in a beautiful wooden box, a leather-bound journal, a Maglite, a cast iron skillet — these are the essentials that will last the men (and women) on your list a lifetime.
Most Evocative: Honestly...WTF's Gift Guides
Oh, how I'd love to be the ultimate City Girl with the pom-pom cap, gold headphones, and the glam jammies! Or the Globetrotter with a bracelet flask, gold lantern, and fedora. And I would even be the Dude, if it meant I got a classic lumberjack jacket, luxury skincare, and a magical sailboat kite. Alas, I'm currently a Country Girl, which means having to make do with killer boots and arrow bracelets.
Most Categories + Most Impossible: Martha Stewart Christmas Gifts
The talented folks at Martha Stewart have drawn from their extensive archives to compile 22 gift guides — twenty-two! Categories include Gifts For Her, Gifts For Busy Moms, Gifts For The Hostess, Gifts For Him, Handmade Gifts For Him, Gifts For Pets, and my favorite, Gifts From Martha. This last one is not for people who leave their shopping until the last minute. You'll want to have commissioned custom flower pots, mastered beekeeping, and sheared your sheep months ago.
Most Curated, Literally: SFMOMA's Made In The Bay
A collaboration between the San Francisco Museum Of Modern Art and San Francisco's 7x7 Magazine, Made In The Bay is a gift guide come to life. A selection of the artsy, locally-made items are featured on 7x7, and nearly 50 of them can be ordered directly from SFMOMA, but for the full festive experience you'll have to hit up the pop-up shop at Yerba Buena in downtown San Francisco.
Most Darkly Hilarious: The Awl's Ultimate Gift Guide For The 1%
Finally, the perfect gifts for both the baseball lover in my life (a $13,400 Hermes baseball glove) and my best friend's new baby (a $5,125 rabbit fur-lined cashmere onesie). Since he'll outgrow it in about a month, that's a budget-friendly $170/day of wear!
