The street. I have found a number of really great pieces just sitting at the curb waiting for the garbage collectors to haul them off. It's surprising the things that people throw away. I actually found a Geroge Nelson credenza standing on it's end beside a dumpster, (but since my place is so small, it's at my boyfriend's).
What inspired you?
I find inspiration in books, magazines, and films. I love the apartments in almost every Woody Allen film, "Husbands and Wives" in particular although the lofts in "Deconstructing Harry" and "Melinda and Melinda" are amazing. They are always filled with shelves books and have great lighting.
I love magazines like Living Etc. because they show really great REAL places that aren't all "My decorator found this piece in Morocco."
Actually I have two. The first is try to keep everything well edited, especially in a small place. Group things by color or theme. That way the eye reads them as a whole, rather than as mismashed clutter. And the second is is patience. It takes time to accumulate all the right pieces and accessories that really reflect a personal style.
