Name: Melissa & Stu
Location: Passaic, NJ
Type: Rented 2nd floor of a big old house... Living Room was 2 smaller rooms, but we knocked out a wall to create a larger, more open living room area.
Why I use color:
I use color because every shade, every hue, and every combination in the spectrum of color is unique in its own way, and each color, whether it stands on its own, or is paired up with other colors, has the capability to evoke an endless array of different moods, emotions, and feelings, each one as individual as the eye of the beholder.
The use of color, from subtle to over-the-top bold, plays an intricate part in the way we express ourselves as individuals in the world, and ultimately, how we view each other in it. The colors in my living room are lively, yet make me feel comfortable.
I like to mix and match colors and textures when it comes to decorating, and combine all the layers that make up the room, from the wall and trim paint, the paintings and photographs, the furniture and throw pillows, to the flooring and rugs, to the lighting and all the other little bits that all together create a space that says me.
2 Good color tips:
1. Go with colors that you consistently find yourself drawn to, or colors that simply make you feel good.
2. Don't be afraid to experiment and mix it up until you feel it's
the right color, or combination of colors, for you... Nothing is permanent unless you want it to be!
2 good color resources:
1. Peruse the color cards at your local paint store for colors that strike you... Then take them home to see how the color/colors work in your room, under your own lighting.
2. Home decorating magazines such as House Beautiful, Domino, House
& Garden, and World of Interiors, to name a few, offer a cornucopia of new inspiration, trends, and decorating tips every month.
