Remember those old Braun electronics, like the pocket radio on the left above, designed by German designer Dieter Rams? You can clearly see the influence his design language had on iOS devices. And now software designers are bringing Dieter Rams style to several iOS apps for music, weather, and keeping time...
First, the T3 music player
($.99) provides a clean music library and playback experience harkening to an era when you'd be listening from a reel-to-reel or vinyl instead of MP3. Playing back files and creating playlists is all very simple: the jog wheel allows circular movement to the desired button; play, pause, stop, repeat, and next/previous tracks. Even a "now playing" box displays the artist and song info for the track being played.
Next up is the Weather Dial app (also $.99). This app displays current weather info, as well as hourly and weekly outlooks with minimalist, yet fun graphics. A see-through dial with marker rotates to show graphics representing current weather conditions. The sunny and clear graphic (displayed above) is helpful, but I found some of the other images to be somewhat confusing.
The third and final app looks like an old intercom box, but in fact, it is merely a timer complete with vintage sounding buzzer or retro computer voice announcement. ChimeO'Clock ($.99) simply works as a timer on the hour, half hour, or quarter hour.
These 3 apps do a charming job of evoking the spirit and style Dieter Rams. Have you found any other apps that fit into this category?
