Each other. Many of our DIY projects cause a lot of stress, and whenever one of us is about to throw in the towel on an idea, the other one steps in to take a step back, rethink, and help move the project along. So far we have always persevered. Designing this unit would have been nearly impossible with just one of us.
Our challenge is that we started with a plain white box of an apartment that is a clone of thousands of other tiny Hollywood studios with nothing especially unique about it. We wanted to make the apartment feel as large and inviting as possible so we started by painting the walls a very dark chocolate brown.
We saw this as a way to add more lighting sources and fill the space with less furniture without feeling bare, thus larger. By adding large scale hand painted murals to the walls we fill the space without taking from the physical floor space.
Your favorite element:
We love our hand painted designs on the walls. We are avid do-it-yourselfers and most things in the apartment we make from scratch. The walls are great because they are very vivid, cost little more than a can of paint and save space. We have thrown parties with over 25 people, and nobody felt cramped.
