It's Home Project month, which means we've been looking at lots of home improvement projects - how tos and before and afters on upholstery, painting, rearranging, decorating and organizing. We just watched a video that delves into a different project area - making your own furniture pieces - in this case, assembling desks, no woodworking skills required.
The first design in the 2 minute video how-to on Shelter Pop ulilizes bookshelves for a custom look, the second (shown above, photo 2) goes for a more industrial feel, and the final (above, photo 3) is the budget solution, using only $50 of materials.

I like these ideas!
I wonder about the first one though, would the shelves slide around sideways, and if so how would you anchor them?
The second one is pretty cool too... although I doubt my version would look as polished as that!
Cute.
But I'm afraid the third one with the cinderblocks will give me scratches and bruises easily. But that's just me.
My husband added an office second work station to an existing Elfa hanging shelf system. We bought a custom cut poplar board from a lumber store for the desktop. It's more durable and better-looking than Elfa desktops. It was very easy to do.
Yeah, the ideas are good but the desktops are awful. That contact paper, faux finish desktop, especially, won't fool anyone in person. I like Miami's Elaine suggestion of getting a custom cut board from a lumber store.
I'm with paperkite--awful desktops. Two filing cabinets and a table top from Ikea would look better. But I appreciate that someone tried to be creative.
Cinderblocks? Really? Um, not unless you're broke and young.
