We love creative birthday cakes, but quite often we look at them and think, "We could never make that." You might remember a previous post on 31 cakes from Parenting magazine that detail each bit of candy used to make recreating it at home a snap. well, they're back with 30 new designs that make us smile. There's owls, planes and even bugs under a magnifying glass!
We featured 10 of our favorite cakes above, though the full 30 is for sure worth a glance at. Most utilize candies found at your local grocery or drug store to make a basic cake look like you spent all afternoon handcrafting bits and pieces.
Would you ever think to roll out Tootsie rolls to use them as a windshield? What about cutting a marshmallow in half for a pig's snout? Click on over to see all the tricks of the trade and make a mental note as to which ideas you might be able to borrow for your next birthday bash!

So cute. I love that unicorn.
I recently started a cake photo gallery on my kids' parties site:
http://kidsparties.about.com/od/birthdayparties/ig/Birthday-Cakes/index.01.htm
There are about 35 cakes in there now ... and counting.
For my son's 3rd birthday, I made him a dinosaur cake, with white and dark "meat". The "white" was lime coconut flavoured (made with coconut cream instead of milk, and lime juice and zest) and a really rich chocolate. It was great!
Mine did wind up looking exactly like this:

There is just something about the edible Tinkerbells that is creepy. I'm picturing the eating process consisting of pulling her apart and eating her piece by piece. Disturbing.
frum, that's exactly how I felt about the unicorn!
mschatelaine, that is hilarious. I have never thought about the "meat" of dinosaurs before, or whether it came in light and dark. )
My son's best cake was a corn cake. A bakery made it but it would be as easy as any of these. It was an ear of corn with the husk peeled back. I think he was turning 7. Now, 9 years later, I can't remember why I was possessed to ask for that, but the kids all loved it! We also had a snake cake for a nature-themed party and a music-box cake for my daughter, complete with plastic jewelry and a ballerina sticking out of it.
I just made a Pizza cake for my Daughter's 2nd birthday tonight. We are having the party at Chuck E Cheese, so I thought it was appropriate!
Check it out!
