Name: Elizabeth and Steve
Location: New York, NY
Type: We own our one bedroom apt.
Why I use color:
I like color to make me feel a certain emotion when being in a room. In my bedroom I am going for "sensual and moody". I've had my walls all sorts of colors over the years and really wanted something different. It took me a while to figure out what color to use. We had the bedroom entirely white until recently and saw the color in a magazine and knew it was right.

2 Good color tips:
1. If you start painting a wall and realize the color isn't
perfect don't feel like you have to keep painting. I usually don't get it right on the first try. Its so much better to throw out a can of paint then to stare at the wall every day and think "if only this was darker"!
2. Also, its very modern to paint the floorboard the same color as the walls. It's so seamless!
2 good color resources:
1. I get my inspiration from high quality design magazines like
Elle Decoration UK, Living Etc (from UK) and Dwell. The Brits are ahead of us as far as home design. They were showing orange and brown walls years ago.
2. I also get inspiraton from the seasons. I don't know if I'll keep my bedroom this color next summer but it's nice and cozy for fall and winter.

Sheex Bedding
I absolutely must know the brand and name of the wall color. It's exactly what I want and I think you did well with the white and brown.
It would be nice to see 2 different photos as opposed to the same nearly exact shot of the one room, though.
I like this very much
A lovely shade of blue, I agree, but showing the same view twice doesn't do much to demonstrate your skill at telling a color story.
I do like your chandelier, and a kitty at rest is always sweet. Not much to see here in terms of color at play in your space.
I love color, I'd just like to see a little more done with the room
So there's a blue frame on the blue wall, with blue in it, all the same shade?
Honestly, kinda boring. At least vary the shade of the frame, or put something else in it.
Great shade of blue! What paint is it? I really wanted that Dwell pattern (in the duvet cover) only my husband wouldn't go for it. Not sure why. It looks perfect with that blue and all the white. Moody would perfectly describe how I'd feel if I had to read in bed with an overhead light, though. Did you hide the bedside light because it's ugly? Or is this a work in progress?
Love the chandelier - where's it from?
When I saw the first picture I thought "Awww, the kitty and the puppy are getting along so nicely!" Then I scrolled down and went "Uh-oh, where's the dog?"
I really like this color blue in a bedroom as well as your tip about painting the floorboard to match the wall color.
I love the chandelier, the paint colour and the pets! It doesn't appear that you have a headboard and I think having one may eliminate the need for the painted frame-y thing above the bed. I made my own out of plywood, batting and fabric and it made such an impact.
... need ... more ... viewpoints ...
why two of the same angle? maybe so you could get both the dog and cat in?
but, I DO love that blue with the chocolate brown & white. very updated classic. and contrary to the others, i don't think the frame is boring. i think it's unexpected and very cool.
i'd give you extra points for that dog if i could.
Um.. I guess the instructions for the contest WERE a little vague when they said "2 photos" and didnt specify 2 different areas or viewpoints.
Love the blue, love the weiner. Not enough "creative" use of color going on here. Bold for sure- but not inspiring.
JenDC- I've been laughing for the last five minutes at your "A kitty at rest is always sweet" comment. I can take a picture of my cat 22 out of 24 hours on any given day and she will be "resting." Thanks for making me smile :) Anywho, I do like the colors in this room but agree it does look a bit unfurnished/unfinished. Do Not paint the frame a different color, looks great as is. Also love the door trim, not going white was brave. If you added a headboard, some sconces and maybe some hand painted antique wallpaper in the frame - your bedroom could be in a design magazine, too.
does any one else have an opinion on painting the floorboards? i am repainting this weekend and currently everything in the room in one (ugly!) color; trim, ceiling, walls, doors, windows, wall sconces (who did that?!). i was going to paint all the trim a different color from the walls and ceiling, but now think maybe only the trim at the top and paint the trim at the bottom the same as the wall? anyone?
but i TOTALLY love that color blue. very similar to what i am doing! and where is the endtable from?
This is funny, for some reason this reminds me of Madonna's apartment in New York. The one her brother designed in the 90's. It is totally not the same but that's all I can think of. I have to see if I can find a picture of that.
It looks restful, which is what a bedroom should be.
We have the same exact chandelier in our guest bedroom with powder blue walls...
I like it a lot, like the wall, chandy, doorframe, visible bare floor, sheets, like it.
I'd would interested to see more clearly what color the doorframe is and know how that came about.
but... there are too few pictures or elements of interacting color compared to some other entries for me to vote +.
update: not that i'm saying there has to be more color, just i don't see enough of how this color impacts the space. and what else might be going on in the room.
i just bought a primacolor color pencil called peacock blue this afternoon... it feels like it might be similar.
fabulous... and what about that empty blue picture frame!?
Great color on the wall, but it doesn't have much relation to the bed covering or rug. With as dominant a color as that blue, and it is a great color, the rest of the room has to be part of the use of that color. The contest is use of color, not just color.
kyd I like your idea about trim. In fact, I find white trim everywhere to be way too jarring against bold colors. I like the way this entry handled trim. Very nice.
I also like the frame painted the same color as the wall - I love different textures, etc. done in one shade. Urban Outfitters does this a lot in their catalog, I love it. Clean and modern wihtout really sacrificing the integrity of the original architecture and lines.
Hi Elizabeth and Steve:
I like what you did so very much and I also like your notion of painting the baseboards so as to achieve a seamless look. My own little comment (and I voted Insta-Finalist) is that you could have carried the seamlessness farther by painting the door and the light switch, as well as the molding around the door.
Else, I would have liked to have seen the door molding match the door itself.
I'm not entirely sure why US dwellings have baseboards -- why are they necessary? I assume they serve some purpose, else why bother with more, more, more? In any case, I applaud the way you minimized all the visual clutter that happens in American construction.
I like this space very much, but I can't give it an "Insta-finalist" vote because essentially, it is two photos of the same thing taken a couple of feet apart. How else is color used in the home?
I love the color, bedding, and chandelier. I think multiple frames painted crisp white would really pop better than the single blue frame above the bed. It's just not doing anything for you. I have been wanting to paint my walls this color. What color/brand did you use???
It's nice and I like the wall color, but it feels very unfinished to me, and I don't see how things tie together. While I like the bedding, I don't think it goes, and while I like the idea of an empty frame, I think for that to work there needs to be much more contrast.
It's lovely when you can get such a bold color to work on your walls. I'm impressed! I'm dying to find out what color/brand the paint is. I like the monochromatic wall/frame/negative space. I think it would be a real challenge to find a piece of art that wouldn’t completely destroy the effect you have going with the blue. I like it – adds texture/dimension. I concur, the bedspread is fantastic! As is the chandelier. I really love what you've done with this room. I imagine the rest of your house must be lovely as well – is it too late to add a second picture of a different room?
I think the kitty ate the doggy.
And if you removed the rug, the room would be a lot more striking.
In general, I like this room. It's restrained and peaceful. I do, however, agree that the framed piece of wall is quite simply BEGGING for something! Use your creativity here. The options are endless.
you know what i don't get, is the crap-ass empty picture frame over the bed. what is that supposed to signify? that absolutely nothing is in the frame? that absolutely nothing happens below in that bed, excluding masturbation under the covers with a flashlight and a Victoria's Secret Catalogue?
Dear Kyd:
I've thought about your question a great deal and here are my two cents:
First, I think that painting the floorboards and ceiling molding a different color from the wall is useful ONLY if you have very high ceilings and the contrasting color (on the boards and molding) will enhance the architecture in such a way that helps define the proportions of the room.
For me, I would not use contrast in a room with ceilings less than at least 11 or 12 feet. If my ceilings were at least that tall, I'd probably use the Fibonacci (sp?) numbers to calculate whether the room's proportions could be improved by artful use of contrasting molding.
That said, this is a matter of personal taste. I prefer less rather than more, particularly in regards to moldings, as I find that hanging artwork can be complicated by too much stuff already on the wall.
PS:
Yet in the room above, the owners painted only the wall as a contrast and left the thingy out of the ceiling in the same color as the ceiling. (Why can't I remember the name of the thing that juts out from the ceiling?)
That works well BECAUSE it demarcates the color, making it almost like the art of the room.
Sorry this is so poorly worded; I wish I had expressed this better.
In contrast to everyone "loving" painting the baseboards, (and suggesting painting the lightswitch plate??!) I have to disagree. NO contrast, looks like you got lazy painting.
The blue is depressing, the scale of the nightstand(s) non-exsistant, and the frame-thing just did not work. It just looks empty and undone.
The chandelier is great though. I have the same one.
Love the colors!
In these pics the chandelier is lost is the white background, did you consider a dusk/night pic with the chandelier on?
And why not go ahead and frame out a headboard instead of the (oddly scaled) picture frame?
This palette screams out for accessories and accents that pop (ouch, did I said 'pop'?). The rug, the door perhaps, maybe a pendant lamp instead of the crystals, add color to the pillows, art, etc. It needs another dimension.
Great room. Thanks for the view!
Love the blue, but I agree the frame might not be working as well as it could. Also the bedside table/stand is way too small. Very cute kitty & dog!
Ah, the chandelier. SO GLAM. I want one badly.
love that blue color on the wall. have you ever thought about removing the carpet you have down and putting a shag carpet? (maybe that isn't pet friendly?) i'm just envisioning that chandelier and a shag carpet like the celeste from C & B. nice room!
A note to all who like the chandelier: it can be found at this website for 99.00

I realize this is supposed to be about colour, but I'm actually really really loving the white in this room. It's as if the blue makes the white even crisper. Chandelier in the bedroom is fantastic too.
Thank you for all your feedback! I've been on the Glidden Paint and Behr Paint websites trying to remember the color we used for our bedroom. I can't believe I can't remember because I know I agonized over it. I really wish I could share the wealth. I believe we first used "Artisan" by Glidden and it was too turquoise. I think we went with "Lagoon" by Behr but honestly I would only know for sure by going back to Home Depot. By the way, we got our chandelier at Home Depot. It was relatively inexpensive. (I like it but I'm getting a little tired of seeing chandeliers everywhere!) Our doorframes are not painted. My husband stripped the paint off to reveal the beautiful steel underneath. Then he added a few coats of clear polyurethane to make them shiny and not rust. We love the way they look. We wanted to highlight some of the details of our Art Deco building. Steve also stripped the front door which looks fantastic. Our platform bed is the same color metal which looks great with the doorframe and our dressers have metal legs... unfortunately my photos don't do the room justice. I wish I had sent in two different photos but I didn't understand the assignment! We have been inspired by the contest and your comments to bring more color into the apartment by painting our hallway. We are also taking some brilliant advice and are going to make ourselves a headboard! Also our bedside table is from an African store in Harlem. I think it’s a bit too small, too. We'll reassess that new purchase after we get the headboard up. Thanks for the great feedback! - Elizabeth and Steve (and Penelope the dachshund and Syrene the cat! - both are sill alive and have not eaten each other!)
Oh, thanks, Elle, for liking the white in the room. I like it, too. Now I'm feeling bad about my comment about our chandelier since people like it. I like it, too. I just hate when a trend I like starts popping up in everywhere and then you feel so unoriginal. Oh well... thanks again, folks!
Oh that is the cutest dog I've ever seen! I just love this color! Blue has always been my favorite color but I've never tried this shade. Hard to believe since I have three blue walls in my apartment! I hope you guys win!!!
I like this! It looks like Domino, in a good way. I can see how some think it is a little under furnished, however. I thought that Sam had some REALLY good ideas. I second sconces or bedside lamps, and a headboard.
I personally would NOT buy anything from greatchandeliers.com (owned by a company called Spectrum Home Furnishings). Check out complaints.com - people are getting screwed by them left and right.

I loves me some complaint.com.
Love the color on the main wall. Your combination of colors is great. The white, brown and blue work well together. Great Job! The chandelier that you chose adds just enough interest in your space.
The blue is a great color and the linens are lovely but they don't seem to tie together with anything but the very cute dog. Is the cat a blue -brown- white calico?
I love the color of the wall and the door frame, also I love the blue picture frame. I am not crazy about the area rug or how close to the ground the bed is. This is a great start but there is room for improvement.
Yawn. Snooze. SNORE!!!
Turquoise. Blech. I don't like it in tacky old rings and things, and I don't like it above my bed. Therefore, you shouldn't either.
I'm glad you are thinking about a headboard, I think there needs to be a bigger piece of art above the bed or a fabulous headboard. The frame just seems too small and too far away from the bed. I do think dachshunds really set off any decor, though mine is usually burrowed under the covers instead of sitting nicely on the bed!
I think some people need to practice "constructive criticism".
I personally feel "I" would not of gone this route...however, for what it is trying to do it is doing it very well.
Some empty frames painted that blue hung vertically against that white wall might help throw the blue some more...and part of me wants to see some pinstripe brown and white throw at the edge of the bed. They also sell these great little mirrored light switch plates that I think would be a great friend of the chandalier.
You must be beach bums at heart because the colors remind me of the calming effects of sand and sea and crisp summer linen. Perfect for a bedroom. I love the color palette and the mixture of textures--and the fact that the room is masculine and feminine. (I've read through all the posted comments...what about combining your headboard/open frame ideas to frame your bed? Add an oversized frame around the head of the bed (same or different color) and add a fake frame hanger upto the ceiling (with unusual roping and object to cover the frame hanger)?) You still get my vote for the way it is, though!
Overall, I like it. I like the brown-white-teal blue going on. I want to do something similar.
Is it just my computer or is the doorframe army green? I need to understand this before I can vote.
Like the color, but that's it. The room seems like an unfinished project and more could be done to it.
Now that I've read the owner's comments I'm sorry to have taken issue with the door frames. Elizabeth and Steve so obviously enjoy their door frames and I was not appreciating them!
E&S: What a beautiful job. I like your sense of beauty so very much and I just adore the color and the feeling of your bedroom. It is, indeed, sensual, and it's calming and relaxed as well. What a nice job.
that blue rocks! those rude comments are from people with absolutely no sense of style! if you got nothing good to say, then stfu!!
