Casters can be plastic and clunky and cheap. But they can also make a piece of furniture. Just look at these four designs to see what we mean:
- These chairs from Century Furniture are perched on small casters that don't at all detract from the style of the chair.
- The Nimbus sofa would be simple for one person to move alone with casters on its rear legs. From Faram, it's a commercial piece but could look cool in a contemporary home.
- This has to be one of our favorite coffee tables ever: The Whitney from Restoration Hardware.
- We love the industrial-style mobility of the Lana Dining Table at Domicile Online.

I've done my homework on caster hunting. If you're hunting for brass casters, check out Rockler or Rejuvenation. CoolCasters has a huge selection of modern and fun casters. I've put casters on almost all of my studio furniture. It makes life so much easier.
When the kids were growing up, we never had casters on any chairs, nor did we have swivel chairs.
I tried to minimize the reasons for kids to mis-behave. Three little tornados at the dinner table would have driven me crazy!
Does anyone know who makes the blue mirror in the first picture? I kind of love it.
mjs7640, my mother in law has 6 large flowery swivel dining chairs in her breakfast room...my husband said, they grew up with those chairs..but luckly, none of her 3 kids are crazy..just my mother in law..so worked out ok for them.
I love the Restoration Hardware piece. However, showing something that is no longer for sale is not nice.
I've been looking for some tufted side chairs recently and have come across a lot of chairs with casters only on the front two legs. Is this just for ease of movement or is there some other reason to have them (maybe they have historical significance because everything I have been looking at has been some sort of antique reproduction)? Although the casters were not plastic, I think they look a little funny.
Why is there not more information about the Century chairs? The link sends you to the century website where there are 33 pages of chairs to scroll through. I do not see much added value in showing a pretty picture without sufficient detail to identify the pieces.
Thanks for this century furniture information. You have a nice blog.
